Cultivating complexity: Advancements in establishing in vitro models for the mucus‐adhering gut microbiota

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 17, Issue 10, October 2024.
This review discusses novel strategies to specifically target and evaluate the mucosal microbiota, such as culturomics applied to mucosal biopsies, intestinal organoids and artificial in vitro models incorporating mucus. Abstract A healthy mucus is essential for maintaining intestinal homeostasis and overall well‐being.

Soil archaea response to the water table drawdown in freshwater wetlands in the Yellow River Estuary

open access: yesHydroResearch
Water table dynamics affect the diversity and community structure of archaea in coastal wetlands. However, how the soil archaeal community responds to the water table drawdown remains unexplored.

Production de méthane et interactions microbiennes dans le rumen

open access: yesINRAE Productions Animales, 2011
Le méthane entérique est formé par les Archea méthanogènes au cours de la dégradation microbienne des aliments dans le rumen, cequi implique que toute variation dans sa production est le résultat d'un changement dans la chaîne alimentaire microbienne ...

Evolutionary formation of melatonin and vitamin D in early life forms: insects take centre stage

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 99, Issue 5, Page 1772-1790, October 2024.
ABSTRACT Melatonin, a product of tryptophan metabolism via serotonin, is a molecule with an indole backbone that is widely produced by bacteria, unicellular eukaryotic organisms, plants, fungi and all animal taxa. Aside from its role in the regulation of circadian rhythms, it has diverse biological actions including regulation of cytoprotective ...

Human Lsg1 defines a family of essential GTPases that correlates with the evolution of compartmentalization

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2005
Background Compartmentalization is a key feature of eukaryotic cells, but its evolution remains poorly understood. GTPases are the oldest enzymes that use nucleotides as substrates and they participate in a wide range of cellular processes.

Calix[8]arene‐Based Manganese Complexes for Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction

open access: yesIsrael Journal of Chemistry, Volume 64, Issue 6-7, July 2024.
Abstract Transition metal catalysts with modified second‐coordination sphere employed in the electrocatalytic CO2 can result in increased activity or directed product selectivity. Calixarenes can form metal complexes and potentially catalyze reactions within its cavity, taking advantage of the surrounding phenols groups to tune the reactivity by second‐

Influence of Microbial Activities on Fluorescent Dissolved Organic Matter in the Dark Canada Basin Waters

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, Volume 129, Issue 6, June 2024.
Abstract The fluorescence characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were measured to determine the distribution and drivers of DOM in the dark Canada Basin waters. We studied the relationship between fluorescent DOM (FDOM) and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) in the whole water column as well as in the main water masses (Pacific Winter Water ...
