Forecasting the Dialysis Burden in Japan: Validation‐Based Projections of Prevalence and Incidence Through 2050

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post‐peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic‐related disruptions remains uncertain.

Learning from school buildings: energy efficiency and user comfort in Metro Vancouver elementary schools

open access: yesFACETS
In this study, schools built after 2000 in Metro Vancouver, Canada, showed an encouraging trend towards lower carbon emissions and energy use intensity. In 17 case studies, heat pumps, decentralized ventilation systems, and higher glazing-to-wall ratios ...

Association Between Individualized Education for Kidney Replacement Therapy Modality Selection and Peritoneal Dialysis Initiation: A Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesTherapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Introduction Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an established home‐based kidney replacement therapy (KRT), but its uptake remains low in Japan. We evaluated whether individualized education in a dedicated outpatient clinic was associated with the initiation of PD.

The Architect and the Law

open access: yes, 2021
Architecture, at its core, is both an art and a science—the art of envisioning spaces and the science of realising them through thoughtful design. As a multidisciplinary field, architecture is influenced by a wide array of factors, from aesthetics and technology to economics and society. Among these, one of the most significant—and often underestimated—

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Spatiotemporal and quantitative analyses of phosphoinositides – fluorescent probe—and mass spectrometry‐based approaches

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Fluorescent probes allow dynamic visualization of phosphoinositides in living cells (left), whereas mass spectrometry provides high‐sensitivity, isomer‐resolved quantitation (right). Their synergistic use captures complementary aspects of lipid signaling. This review illustrates how these approaches reveal the spatiotemporal regulation and quantitative

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Operationalising energy sufficiency for low-carbon built environments in urbanising India

open access: yesBuildings & Cities
India’s urbanisation is considered the largest national urban transformation of the 21st century, with its trajectory having a decisive impact on carbon emissions globally.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.
