The endangered Arctic fox in Norway—the failure and success of captive breeding and reintroduction

open access: yesPolar Research, 2017
The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus L.) is listed as extinct in Finland, endangered in Sweden and critically endangered in Norway. Around 2000 there were only 40–60 adult individuals left, prompting the implementation of conservation actions, including a ...

A Modular Bioinstructive Platform Reveals Mechanistic Insights into Additive‐Free, Topography‐Driven Osteogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Engineered microparticle topographies direct human mesenchymal stem cell osteogenesis without biochemical additives. This osteogenic commitment is driven by canonical Hedgehog signaling and followed by temporal IGF‐II engagement. Two‐photon polymerization demonstrates spatial control, enabling the engineering of topographical gradients that pattern ...

A New 3D Colon on a Chip to Decipher the Influence of Mechanical Forces on the Physiological Cellular Ecosystem

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
To dissect how mechanical forces influence intestinal physiology, we developed a stretchable 3D colon‐on‐chip that integrates tunable topography, stiffness and peristalsis‐like motion within a physiologically relevant microenvironment. We showed that stretching is a dominant factor governing epithelial behavior, markedly enhancing proliferation and ...

The triangulation between Arctic birds, Arctic foxes and Arctic lemmings

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
Many studies have suggested that Arctic predators preying on lemmings, especially the Arctic fox, take advantage of the high prey densities during peak years, but have to switch to alternative prey during years of low lemming density, thereby forcing ...

Behavioral adaptations of Arctic fox, Vulpes lagopus in response to climate change [PDF]

open access: yesCaspian Journal of Environmental Sciences
Climate change is rapidly altering Arctic ecosystems, forcing native species to adapt. This study investigated the behavioral adaptations of Arctic foxes, Vulpes lagopus in response to climate change, focusing on changes in hunting patterns, den site ...

Extracellular Vesicles Modulation by an Adiponectin Receptor Agonist Provides Cardioprotection for Myocardial Ischemic Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that ALY688, a drug mimicking the heart‐protective hormone adiponectin, reduces myocardial ischemia injury. ALY688 increases the production of extracellular vesicles, which carry protective cargo including adiponectin itself.

STIMULATION OF REPRODUCTIVE FUNCTION OF FEMALES AND MALES OF FUR ANIMALS

open access: yesTransactions of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2015
In the Kirov region the effect of humic drug Lignohumate on reproduction of fur animals when administered in the diet was studied. Lignohumate to increases the number of registered puppies at 0.8 head when included in the diet of female mink during the ...

Consecutive earthquakes temporarily restructured the zooplankton community in an Alpine Lake [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Two consecutive earthquakes temporary changed a zooplankton community in a high-mountain Lake Krn (altitude 1383 m a.s.l.). It was dominated by the eurytherm copepod, Cyclops vicious, until 1998, when the first earthquake hit the lake (EMS = 5.6).

Water Permeates and Plasticizes Amorphous Carbon Dots: Unraveling the Inner Accessibility of the Nanoparticles by Glass Transition Studies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The water permeability of amorphous carbon dots (CDs) is demonstrated by investigating their plasticization. Novel polyamide‐based and amorphous nanoparticles are synthesized by controlling their inner packing density. Water plasticization is evidenced by the decrease of the CDs glass transition temperature with increasing the hydration degree.
