Redescription of †Eobrasilia coutoi (Metatheria: Polydolopimorphia), a unique sclerocarpophagous metatherian from the Palaeogene of South America: Systematic affinities, and paleoecological and evolutionary implications

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The ‘Palaeogene strata’ of the Itaboraí Basin (upper Paleocene‐lower Eocene), Southeastern Brazil, has preserved 29 genera and almost 50 species of metatherians (about 65% of its mammalian diversity). Among them, Eobrasilia coutoi Simpson, 1947 is the most enigmatic due to its quite fragmentary nature.

First evidence of a mandibular crest in Brasileodactylus Kellner, 1984 (Pterosauria, Pteranodontoidea, Anhangueridae), with comments on pterosaur headcrests

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Brasileodactylus araripensis Kellner, 1984, is a toothed pterosaur from the Lower Cretaceous Romualdo Formation of the Araripe Basin, Brazil. Traditionally regarded as crestless, the species has been central to debates on anhanguerid taxonomy, as most members of the clade possess well‐developed sagittal cranial or dentary crests.

Morphological adaptations of cervical vertebrae in plunge‐diving sulids

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Foraging strategy frequently drives morphological diversification in birds. The plunge‐diving behavior of certain species makes the functional and ecological trade‐offs of variation in cervical vertebrae an especially intriguing question. This study compares cervical vertebrae across five plunge‐diving species and two non‐plunge‐diving species,

Ocular morphology and morphometry of the great egret (Ardea alba): A comprehensive anatomical description

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Ardea alba (Linnaeus, 1758) is widely distributed, yet knowledge of its ocular morphology remains limited. This study described the morphometry and morphology of the eyeball and its accessory glands in six specimens using radiography, morphometry, light and scanning electron microscopy, and 3D scanning.

PONTICULUS POSTICUS OF THE ATLAS VERTEBRA

open access: yesNational Journal of Medical Research, 2011
Atlas is the first cervical vertebra. It articulates with the occipital bone above and the axis vertebra below. It plays an important role in movement of the skull and the neck. A rare variation of the atlas vertebra is found where the posterior arch of

Chiari I Malformation: Review and Update of Current Treatment Options

open access: yesClinical Anatomy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The pathophysiology of Chiari malformation type I (CM‐I) is complex, involving structural abnormalities at the craniovertebral junction that result in herniation of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum. In this study, we aim to present and evaluate current treatment options for CM‐I, with a focus on evidence‐based clinical ...

Multiple coexisting variations of skull and cervical spine anatomy in a symptomatic patient — uncommon or uncommonly noticed? A CT-based case study

open access: yesFolia Morphologica
BACKGROUND: Among many anatomical variations of the skull and cervical spine, some may be an underlying cause of a disease, while others remain clinically silent.
