Ornithodoros (Alectorobius) puertoricensis (Acari: Argasidae): Redescription by Scanning Electron Microscopy

The female, male, nymphal instars, and larva of Ornithodoros puertoricensis Fox are redescribed from specimens collected in Haiti. Data on host species and geographic distribution are also presented.

The tick species found in Brazil are reviewed. Today, 61 species belonging to nine genera (Argas (1 sp.), Antricola (3 spp.), Carios (10 spp.), Ornithodoros (3 spp.), Amblyomma (30 spp.), Dermacentor (1 sp.), Haemaphysalis (3 spp.), Ixodes (8 spp.), and Rhipicephalus (2 spp.)) are regarded as endemic or established in Brazil. On the Origin of soft ticks (Parasitiformes, Ixodoidea, Argasidae)

The origin of the common evolutionary branch of soft and hard ticks is dated to the later Permian, approximately coinciding with the Permian extinction, and divergence of the common branch of Ixodoidea into ancestral forms of Argasidae and Ixodidae occurred in the Triassic.
