Integrative taxonomy of Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) (Acari: Ixodida: Argasidae)

open access: yesTicks and Tick-borne Diseases, 2018
Afrotropical Ornithodoros (Ornithodoros) ticks are revised based on qualitative morphology of females and nymphs, as well as tarsus I shape outlines of females measured in a geometric morphometric framework. These lines of evidence corroborate lineages based on 16S rRNA nucleotide sequence data. Four previously unrecognized species are described, along

Environmental and health associations with parasite presence on a coastal sentinel, the little penguin

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2025, Issue 5, May 2025.
Seabird health is linked to their marine and terrestrial environments, but health–environment relationships are rarely described. Parasites are common among seabird colonies, however reductions to seabird health may occur if the delicate parasite–host relationship is imbalanced.

Potential mechanisms implied in tick infection by arboviruses and their transmission to vertebrate hosts

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, Volume 20, Issue 2, Page 315-330, March 2025.
We summarize the recent progress in understanding defense mechanisms in specific tissues or sites that are encountered by arboviruses and discuss their possible roles in virus infection or transmission. Abstract Ticks can transmit many pathogens, including arboviruses, to their vertebrate hosts.

Argas (Persicargas) persicus (Oken, 1818) (Ixodida: Argasidae) in Sicily with considerations about its Italian and West-Mediterranean distribution

open access: yesParasite, 2010
Recently, in the province of Trapani (Western Sicily), some overwintering specimens of the argasid tick Argas (Persicargas) persicus (Oken, 1818) were observed and collected. Morphological and genetic analysis were utilized in order to reach a definitive

Inespecificidade parasitária em Argas (Persicargas) miniatus Koch, 1844 (Acari: Argasidae) Nonspecificity of parasitism on Argas (Persicargas) miniatus Koch, 1844 (Acari: Argasidae)

Development of a rapid and reliable surveillance method for Ornithodoros turicata americanus in gopher tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) burrows in the southeastern United States

open access: yesMedical and Veterinary Entomology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 122-133, March 2025.
We developed a rapid, effective technique for surveying for Ornithodoros turicata, a vector of African swine fever virus using gopher tortoise burrows. When working under a time constraint during tick collection, vacuuming substrate from the top meter of the burrow followed by sifting for soft ticks outperformed CO2 traps.

Human-Pathogenic Kasokero Virus in Field-Collected Ticks

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2020
Kasokero virus (KASV; genus Orthonairovirus) was first isolated in 1977 at Uganda Virus Research Institute from serum collected from Rousettus aegyptiacus bats captured at Kasokero Cave, Uganda.
