Publication journals of research on wasp spider, Argiope bruennichi: specialized or general? [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Palestine Ahliya University for Research and Studies
This original research article discusses the publication trends of research on the wasp spider, Argiope bruennichi (Scopoli, 1772), in specialized arachnological journals versus general scientific journals.

Males of the orb-web spider Argiope bruennichi sacrifice themselves to unrelated females. [PDF]

open access: yesBiol Lett, 2010
Costs of inbreeding can lead to total reproductive failure and inbreeding avoidance is, therefore, common. In classical sex roles with no paternal care, the selective pressure to avoid inbreeding is mostly on the female, which carries the higher costs.

Argiope bruennichi [PDF]

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA Part B, 2020
Argiope bruennichi in the structure of orb-weaver spider communities In this study, 1717 spider individuals from 16 species were collected in two regions: the Sandomierz Basin (SAN) in the south and the Mazury Lake District (MAZ) in the north of Poland (Table 2).

An Analysis of Factors Affecting Genotyping Success from Museum Specimens Reveals an Increase of Genetic and Morphological Variation during a Historical Range Expansion of a European Spider. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Natural history collections house an enormous amount of plant and animal specimens, which constitute a promising source for molecular analyses. Storage conditions differ among taxa and can have a dramatic effect on the success of DNA work.

Complete mitogenomes of two orb-weaver spiders, Argiope bruennichi and Araneus ventricosus

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA. Part B. Resources, 2020
We performed high-throughput sequencing on the complete mitogenomes of two Araneidae species, a wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi) and a large nocturnal spider (Araneus ventricosus). The two mitogenomes contain 14,060 bp and 14,607 bp, and GC content of 26.

A range‐expanding butterfly is susceptible to cold and long winters but shows no signs of local adaptation to winter conditions

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 37, Issue 12, Page 3064-3078, December 2023., 2023
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Numerous species shift or expand their ranges poleward in response to climate change. Even when expanding species follow their climatic niches, expanding range margin populations are likely to face unfamiliar environmental conditions and thus natural selection for local

Multiple paths toward repeated phenotypic evolution in the spiny‐leg adaptive radiation (Tetragnatha; Hawai'i)

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 18, Page 4971-4985, September 2023., 2023
Abstract The repeated evolution of phenotypes provides clear evidence for the role of natural selection in driving evolutionary change. However, the evolutionary origin of repeated phenotypes can be difficult to disentangle as it can arise from a combination of factors such as gene flow, shared ancestral polymorphisms or mutation.

Impacts of Quaternary glaciation, geological history and geography on animal species history in continental East Asia: A phylogeographic review

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 16, Page 4497-4514, August 2023., 2023
Abstract Continental East Asia has a mild Pleistocene climate and a complex recent geological history. Phylogeographic studies of animals over the last 30 years have produced several distinctive patterns. Glaciation refugia are numerous and are not restricted to any particular regions.
