Measuring gravitational lens time delays using low-resolution radio monitoring observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Obtaining lensing time delay measurements requires long-term monitoring campaigns with a high enough resolution (< 1 arcsec) to separate the multiple images.

Towards Water, Food and Energy Security: The Global Challenges and Possible Solutions for a Holistic Vision of Sustainability

open access: yesIrrigation and Drainage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This invited paper gives an overview of the challenges the world is facing and offers a possible solution for water and food security within the holistic integrated concept of the water–energy–food (WEF) nexus. The paper summarizes the experience the author gained through working on various research projects at national and international ...

Understanding Full‐Depth Steric Sea Level Change in the Southwest Pacific Basin Using Deep Argo

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters
Using 9  years of full‐depth profiles from 55 Deep Argo floats in the Southwest Pacific Basin collected between 2014 and 2023, we find consistent warm anomalies compared to a long‐term climatology below 2,000 m ranging between 11 ± 2 to 34 ± 2 m°C, most ...

Cosmic Ray Sampling of a Clumpy Interstellar Medium

open access: yes, 2013
How cosmic rays sample the multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM) in starburst galaxies has important implications for many science goals, including evaluating the cosmic ray calorimeter model for these systems, predicting their neutrino fluxes, and ...

Addressing the World War 2 Warm Anomaly in HadSST.4.2.0.0

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
We present an update to the Hadley Centre Sea‐Surface Temperature dataset (HadSST.4.2.0.0) that addresses residual warm bias during the Second World War (WW2). Using a quantitative definition of the WW2 warm anomaly we identify Engine Room Intake (ERI) bias corrections as the dominant factor in HadSST4, and use this to propose new constraints on ERI ...

The ARGO-YBJ legacy to next generation wide field-of-view experiments

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences, 2017
The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been in stable data taking for more than 5 years at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Observatory (Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l., 606 g/cm2).

e-MERLIN and VLBI observations of the luminous infrared galaxy IC883: a nuclear starburst and an AGN candidate revealed

open access: yes, 2012
The high star formation rates of luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) make them ideal places for core-collapse supernova (CCSN) searches. At radio frequencies, free from dust extinction, it is possible to detect compact components within the innermost LIRG

Combining the Underwater Vision Profiler 6 with sediment traps to measure in situ velocity of marine particles

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Particles sinking from the surface to the deep ocean play a key role in the biological carbon pump, whose efficiency depends partly on sinking velocities. Over the last decade, in situ imaging has enabled critical advances in our understanding of particle dynamics in the ocean.

Chandra Observations of SN 2004et and the X-ray Emission of Type IIp Supernovae

open access: yes, 2007
We report the X-ray detection of the Type II-plateau supernova SN 2004et in the spiral galaxy NGC 6946, using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. The position of the X-ray source was found to agree with the optical position within ~0.4 arcsec.

Keck spectroscopy of CLASS gravitational lenses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We present the optical spectra of four newly discovered gravitational lenses from the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS). These observations were carried out using the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the W. M. Keck-I Telescope as part of a program
