십육나한(十六羅漢)은 석가모니에게서 미륵이 올 때까지 열반에 들지 말고 불법을 수호하고 중생을 이롭게 하라는 수기를 받은 열여섯 명의 불제자들이다. 이들의 모습을 그린 십육나한도(十六羅漢圖)는 조선후기에 특히 성행하였는데, 상주 남장사(南長寺) 는 초기 작품군인 18세기의 사례 중 하나이다. 남장사 는 1790년 남장사 승려들의 발원으로 와 함께 제작되어 영산전에 봉안되었으며 서울 ? 경기에 주 근거지를 둔 화사 상겸(尙謙)과 경상권의 화사 영수(影修) 등이 함께 제작하였다.
