The soil (pedosphere) is the active transition zone between the lithosphere and the atmosphere where the various processes responsible for the transformation of matter and energy occur. The same may be said for plant and animal life (biosphere), so that sometimes both may actually comprise one active unit (the ecosystem, according to Jenny, 1961).
