Novel vegetation estimation index computation in arid environments

2015 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT), 2015
This paper proposes a novel vegetation index for the monitoring and study of vegetation in arid environments. Our aim is to help maintain a record of the area of vegetation available in relation to the total area of the specified region and provide an understanding of vegetation growth.

Spatial Variability of the Aridity Index in China

2012 2nd International Conference on Remote Sensing, Environment and Transportation Engineering, 2012
the objective of this paper is to study the spatial distribution of the Aridity Index in China during the period 1991-2000. Besides, the arid and humid is classified based on the Thornthwaite method, with the help of the climatic data including the monthly precipitation and temperature from 193 meteorological stations.

Diagnosis of GLDAS LSM based aridity index and dryland identification

Journal of Environmental Management, 2013
The identification of dryland areas is crucial for guiding policy aimed at intervening in water-stressed areas and addressing the perennial livelihood or food insecurity of these areas. However, the prevailing aridity indices (such as UNEP aridity index) have methodological limitations that restrict their use in delineating drylands and may be ...

Effect of climate change on reference evapotranspiration and aridity index in arid region of China

Journal of Hydrology, 2013
Temporal variations in reference evapotranspiration (ET0) and aridity index (AI) were comprehensively investigated for 23 meteorological stations during 1955-2008 in the northwest China. The quantitative contributions of the major meteorological variables to the ET0 and AI trends were evaluated and the possible causes were also investigated.

Index Based Livestock Insurance for Northern Kenya’s Arid and Semi-Arid Lands: The Marsabit Pilot

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2009
In Kenya’s arid and semi arid lands (ASALs), drought is the most pervasive hazard, natural or otherwise, encountered by households on a widespread level. This is especially true for northern Kenya, where more than 3 million pastoralist households are regularly hit by increasingly severe droughts.

Evaluation of Drought Condition in Arid and Semi- Arid Regions, Using RDI Index

Water Resources Management, 2018
Investigation of drought event has a great importance in the natural resources management and planning water resources management. One strategy to manage drought is to predict drought conditions by probabilistic tools. In this study climate data of 11 synoptic stations in south of Iran during 1980–2014 were used to estimate of seasonal drought based on

Analysis of heterogeneity of aridity index periodicity over Lebanon

Acta Geophysica, 2019
Lebanon, with its geographic location facing the Mediterranean Sea and dominant rugged topography, is characterized by a strong climatic variability even between zones located few kilometres apart. The investigation of the climatic indices is necessary to delineate such diverse climatic situation over Lebanon.

Validation of temperature–precipitation based aridity index: Paleoclimatic implications

Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 2013
Abstract Water availability in the ecosystem is one of the most crucial environmental factors that determines global terrestrial biome distribution. However, aridity/humidity conditions in the geologic past are difficult to quantify, mainly owing to the lack of a proper parameter.

Preliminary Validation of Mixed-Pixel Clumping Index in the Arid and Semi-Arid Region, Western China

IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018
In this paper, the 1 km Mixed Pixel Clumping Index (MPCI) was calculated using the 30 m HJ-IA11B CCD data in the arid and semi-arid region, Western China. To validate the result, an indirect validation method was proposed. In this method, the 1 km effective LAI was retrieved from the satellite data using the PROSAIL model first, and then corrected to ...

Parametric and Non-Parametric Trend of Drought in Arid and Semi-Arid Regions Using RDI Index

Water Resources Management, 2016
Drought is the most damaging environmental phenomenon, especially in arid and semiarid regions where there are considerable issues in regard to water resources management. In this study, trend of changes in drought severity based on the application of Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI) evaluated (from 1980 to 2010 at 16 synoptic stations).
