Construction and application of a new index for root architecture quantification in arid and semi-arid regions

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science, 2023
During the restoration of degraded vegetation, the mutual matching of underground root systems is crucial for the formation and effective function of the future plant community. In this study, the Amoeba graphic method was integrated to comprehensively establish a root framework index (RFI), based on the three dimensions of root morphology, as well as ...

Anti‐Slip Material‐Based Strategies and Approaches

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review highlights the principle mechanisms of slipping at the microscale, linking contact mechanics with a friction behavior model for surface interfaces. Main strategies to develop anti‐slip properties to the surfaces are discussed alongside standardized testing approaches.

Microbial Contribution to Soiling and Its Impact on Photovoltaic Module Soiling in Arid Zones of the Atacama Desert

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, EarlyView.
Microorganisms colonizing photovoltaic surfaces in the Atacama desert form biofilms that enhance particle adhesion and reduce energy yield. This study identifies UV‐resistant bacteria and carotenoid‐producing strains that interfere with PV performance.

Spatio-temporal Analysis of Aridity Over Punjab Province, Pakistan using Remote Sensing Techniques [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Economic and Environment Geology, 2018
Aridity is a severe threat to the ecological environment and it leads to desertification. Aridity has become a more serious hazard to agricultural countries like Pakistan, followed by socio-economic problems.

Divergent Responses of Bacterial Communities to Permafrost Degradation and Their Associations With Carbon Across Vertical Profiles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Bacterial α‐diversity decreases, but stochasticity and community stability increase across the 15 m‐depth vertical profiles and along the degraded gradient within the active layer. The abundance and interaction of core taxa mainly control community stability in the active and permafrost layers, respectively.

Water‐Efficient Smart Drip Irrigation Enabled by a Low‐Power and High‐Efficiency Flexible Electromagnetic Actuator

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Water scarcity poses a critical threat to global food security. A low‐power, flexible electromagnetic actuator is presented for smart drip irrigation systems. The device achieves precise, wide‐range flow modulation (0.05–5.8 mL/min) in response to real‐time plant demands, reducing water consumption compared to conventional flood irrigation.
