Comparative Cytogenetics Among Three Sympatric Hypostomus Species (Siluriformes: Loricariidae): An Evolutionary Analysis in a High Endemic Region

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2018
The karyotypes of three armored catfish species (Loricariidae) from the Iguaçu river, southern of the Brazil, were compared using different techniques: C-banding, Ag-NOR and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), which used 5S and 18S rDNAs and total

The dental plate on bichir pectoral fins: A unique dermal skeletal element bearing individual odontodes with tooth‐like replacement

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Pectoral fins of bichirs encompass the so‐called dental plates – unique dermal skeletal elements with individual odontodes identical to the oral teeth. Abstract The dermal skeleton appeared early in vertebrate evolution in the form of mineralized skin denticles composed of tooth‐like units—odontodes.

A bristle‐nosed Jurassic ray‐finned fish (Actinopterygii) bears true dermal odontodes on its snout

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Teeth show extreme diversity, including tooth‐like dermal odontodes or “skin teeth” in many extant fishes. We describe the anatomy of enlarged tubercles on the snout of Redfieldius, an extinct early Jurassic fish. We found that the tubercles in Redfieldius are dermal odontodes that evolved independently from those of living species. Abstract Comparison

Development of the chondrocranium in the suckermouth armored catfishAncistrus cf.triradiatus (Loricariidae, Siluriformes) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, 2005
AbstractThe development of the osteocranium of the suckermouth armored catfish Ancistrus cf. triradiatus is described based on specimens ranging from prehatching stages to juvenile stages where the osteocranium is more or less fully formed. The first bony elements that arise are the opercle, jaws, and lateralmost branchiostegal rays, as well as the ...

Morphology of the inner and peripheral ear of the loricariid catfish Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps K. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The morphology of the peripheral and inner ear structures was studied in the loricariid catfish Pterygoplichthys gibbiceps. Specimens (n=6) were preserved in fixative (4% paraformaldehyde, 2% glutaraldehyde in 0.1M phosphate buffer) and dissected for ...

The Quality of Clarity: Lessons from the Sixty‐Year Struggle to Maintain the Purity of Lake Taupō

open access: yesKōtuitui: New Zealand Journal of Social Sciences Online, Volume 21, Issue 2, June 2026.
Sixty years of effort to protect the exceptionally clear water of Lake Taupō, the largest lake in Aotearoa New Zealand, show how environmental memory can help manage a cultural and natural resource. I describe how water clarity and quality in this lake have been protected, through managing soil erosion and phosphorus flows during the 1960s–1980s, and ...
