Knowing by DEAF‐listening: Epistemologies and ontologies revealed in song‐signing

open access: yesAmerican Anthropologist, Volume 124, Issue 4, Page 866-879, December 2022., 2022
Abstract English speech and hearing are perceived by many in the UK population as the key ways that people listen, learn, and know. This often‐invisible assumption quietly colors almost every element of social interaction—within schooling, health, governance, social care, or in art and entertainment. This article unpacks the ways that a particular kind

Towards the Definition of an Ever‐changing Heritage: A Reading of the (Re)appropriation Processes of the Torres Vermelhas in Mozambique

open access: yesCurator: The Museum Journal, Volume 65, Issue 3, Page 623-642, July 2022., 2022
Abstract This article proposes a new way of understanding the modern architecture of Mozambique as cultural heritage beyond existing Eurocentric discourses. It suggests that the discussion should stem from the consideration of this legacy not as a static image of the past, but as an accumulation of appropriations and reappropriations over time: a ...

Participant Observation to Apply an Empirical Method of Codesign with Children

open access: yesAdvances in Human-Computer Interaction, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Dental anxiety in children is a well‐documented problem in the scientific literature. Tools mediated by Information Technology have been shown to positively influence children’s mood based on distraction as well as relaxing activities. We propose an empirical method of codesign with children to generate app content for reducing dental anxiety.

Enhanced Seismic Structural Reliability on Reinforced Concrete Buildings by Using Buckling Restrained Braces

open access: yesShock and Vibration, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
The control of vibrations and damage in traditional reinforced concrete (RC) buildings under earthquakes is a difficult task. It requires the use of innovative devices to enhance the seismic behavior of concrete buildings. In this paper, we design RC buildings with buckling restrained braces (BRBs) to achieve this objective.

NUEVA ARQUITECTURA POPULAR

open access: yes, 2023
Summary .- The research had the objectives: 1. Systematize visual information about the mostimportant aspects of this type of architecture in El Alto and La Paz and define whether formal design criteria existcommon and identifiable. 2. Establish the relative valuation of this type of architecture, its presence, its effectmultiplier, its permanence, its

Physicochemical Changes of Cocoa Beans during Roasting Process

open access: yesJournal of Food Quality, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
During cocoa beans roasting, there are physicochemical changes that develop the chocolate quality attributes. Roasting systems have a particular influence on the development of these characteristics, and the effects of operation variables for each system must be evaluated.

Robust Tracking and Cruise Control of a Class of Robotic Systems

open access: yesMathematical Problems in Engineering, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
This paper presents a controller for a class of robotic systems, based on a first‐order sliding mode with a particular noninvariant, nonconnected surface. With this control it is possible to regulate the position such that the velocity remains, as long as possible, at a specified value until the system is close to the desired position.

An Alcohol‐Free SiO2 Sol‐Gel Matrix Functionalized with Acetic Acid as Drug Reservoir for the Controlled Release of Pentoxifylline

open access: yesJournal of Nanomaterials, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Pentoxifylline (PTX) is a xanthine derivative, with hemorrheologic properties, that has been useful in the treatment of several diseases. However, a conventional route of administration implies high doses, what is unnecessary to the organism, seriously increasing the risk of toxicity because of side effects.

Bifurcations in a Generalization of the ZAD Technique: Application to a DC‐DC Buck Power Converter

open access: yesMathematical Problems in Engineering, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
A variation of ZAD technique is proposed, which is to extend the range of zero averaging of the switching surface (in the classic ZAD it is taken in a sampling period), to a number K of sampling periods. This has led to a technique that has been named K‐ZAD. Assuming a specific value for K = 2, we have studied the 2‐ZAD technique.

Scaling Non‐Regular Shared‐Memory Codes by Reusing Custom Loop Schedules

open access: yesScientific Programming, Volume 11, Issue 2, Page 143-158, 2003., 2003
In this paper we explore the idea of customizing and reusing loop schedules to improve the scalability of non‐regular numerical codes in shared‐memory architectures with non‐uniform memory access latency. The main objective is to implicitly setup affinity links between threads and data, by devising loop schedules that achieve balanced work distribution
