Arrow to the Chest [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Practice and Cases in Emergency Medicine, 2019
A 33-year-old male was brought to the emergency department after a penetrating arrow injury to the chest. Initial evaluation revealed the arrow was penetrating the sternum, lung, and aortic arch. Because the patient was in a remote area, timely transfer to a specialized center for definitive operative repair was delayed approximately 24 hours ...

Broken Arrows [PDF]

open access: yesEURASIP Journal on Information Security, 2008
This paper makes an account of the design and investigations done for the still image watermarking technique used in the 2nd edition of the BOWS challenge. This technique is named "broken arrows" for some reasons given later on, and abbreviated "BA." This zero-bit algorithm is an implementation of a recent theoretical result by Merhav and Sabbag (2008)

The arrow of time

open access: bronzeThe Astrophysical Journal, 1976
A model of the universe which resolves the apparent contradiction between the historical and the thermodynamic arrows of time is presented. Both arrows are reconciled with the almost time-symmetric character of physical laws at the microscopic level. The theory implies that the universe is unfolding in time but not unraveling. (BJG)

The arrow calculus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Functional Programming, 2010
AbstractWe introduce the arrow calculus, a metalanguage for manipulating Hughes's arrows with close relations both to Moggi's metalanguage for monads and to Paterson's arrow notation. Arrows are classically defined by extending lambda calculus with three constructs satisfying nine (somewhat idiosyncratic) laws; in contrast, the arrow calculus adds four

A dangerous arrow [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Heart Journal, 2007
A 75-year-old man underwent yearly follow-up carotid Duplex scanning after carotid endarterectomy (CEA), performed 3 years ago, because of the presence of a large atherosclerotic plaque at the bifurcation of left common carotid artery with severe stenosis (80%). A residual atheroma was present post-CEA with a small stenosis.

The arrow of bioimpedance [PDF]

open access: yesKidney International, 2006
The value of bioimpedance in hemodialysis remains under debate. However, when appropriately used, bioimpedance can provide measures of body hydration characterized by a small error, a high sensitivity to changes in water volume, and, above all, a linear relationship over a wide range of volume changes. These features make it very useful to measure body

Minimally Invasive Dentistry: Parent/Carer Perspectives on Atraumatic Restorative Treatments and Dental General Anaesthesia to the Management of Early Childhood Caries

open access: yesFrontiers in Oral Health, 2021
Introduction: Parents of children treated under dental general anaesthesia (DGA) have reported feelings of concern and anxiety. This study elicited the views of parents/carers (P/C) of children with early childhood caries (ECC) who participated in a ...

Relating the thermodynamic arrow of time to the causal arrow [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment, 2008
Consider a Hamiltonian system that consists of a slow subsystem S and a fast subsystem F. The autonomous dynamics of S is driven by an effective Hamiltonian, but its thermodynamics is unexpected. We show that a well-defined thermodynamic arrow of time (second law) emerges for S whenever there is a well-defined causal arrow from S to F and the back ...

On Quine on Arrow [PDF]

open access: yesSocial Choice and Welfare, 2017
This paper describes an unknown episode in the development of the theory of social choice. In the Summer 1949, while at RAND, Quine worked on Arrow’s (im)possibility theorem. This work was eventually published as a paper on (applied) set theory totally disconnected from social choice.
