Determination of Heavy Metal Contamination in Premium and Supermarket Brands of Extruded Feline and Canine Food in the South African Market

Heavy metal content in commercially available dog foods exceeded the maximum tolerable limits compared to cat foods. Higher priced, premium brands contained higher levels of heavy metals compared to the cheaper supermarket brands. There is a need for more stringent monitoring and regulation of heavy metal content in pet foods.
