Controlled automated reperfusion of the whole body after cardiac arrest: Device profile of the CARL system

open access: yesArtificial Organs, Volume 48, Issue 12, Page 1384-1391, December 2024.
This review covers the mechanism and circuit setup of the Controlled Automated Reperfusion of the whoLe body (CARL) system. CARL comprises a pulsatile flow ECMO with a cytoprotective priming solution. Initial results in prolonged OHCA/IHCA show promising neurological‐intact survival rates of 42% in a multicenter analysis.

Aging Influences Fracture Healing on the Cellular Level and Alters Systemic RANKL and OPG Concentrations in a Murine Model

open access: yesAdvanced Biology, Volume 8, Issue 11, November 2024.
The study investigates the effects of age and severe blood loss on femoral fracture healing, different associated cell populations, and systemic parameters in mice. At 3 weeks after trauma, only age affects cellular fracture healing, as well as systemic RANKL and OPG levels.

Inhibition of proline‐rich tyrosine kinase 2 restores cardioprotection by remote ischaemic preconditioning in type 2 diabetes

open access: yesBritish Journal of Pharmacology, Volume 181, Issue 21, Page 4174-4194, November 2024.
Abstract Background and Purpose Remote ischaemic preconditioning (rIPC) for cardioprotection is severely impaired in diabetes, and therapeutic options to restore it are lacking. The vascular endothelium plays a key role in rIPC. Given that the activity of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is inhibited by proline‐rich tyrosine kinase 2 (Pyk2), we
