De meeste schilders in de zeventiende eeuw waren mannen. Niet alleen in de zeventiende eeuw maar ook daarvoor. In Artemisia’s tijd waren de kunstenaressen slechts mondjesmaat in opkomst. Maar we zien dan tenminste hun namen op papier verschijnen. Artemisia stond in haar tijd niet alleen in de schaduw van mannen.
