AVFs mainly involve the peripheral vascular system but can affect virtually any organ or system in the body. They may be congenital, created surgically for hemodialysis, or caused by pathologic processes.

Pulmonary arteriovenous fistula
The British Journal of Radiology, 1952A proven case of Pulmonary Arteriovenous Fistula in a 54-year-old male is described. Interest lies in the relatively few recorded cases, and in the fact that a cor pulmonale was an associated finding. The diagnosis was established clinically and radiologically, and was confirmed at autopsy.

Coronary Arteriovenous Fistula
Scandinavian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1969A coronary artery fistula to the coronary sinus in a 58-year-old woman with angina pectoris is described. Two big fistulas from the right coronary artery had a common opening which was closed with 5 mattress sutures buffered with teflon pearls and a dacron patch.

Five cases of renal arteriovenous fistulae, diagnosed by renal angiography, are presented. The diagnostic criterion is premature filling of the renal vein and inferior vena cava. Two cases resulted from trauma, one was congenital, one was due to hypernephroma, and the last case resulted from rupture of an aneurysm into a renal vein branch.

Scandinavian Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1982Two cases of congenital pulmonary arteriovenous fistula are reported. Both patients had cyanosis and clubbing of their fingers and toes and also dyspnoea at exercise. Diagnostic procedures included cardiac catheterization and pulmonary angiography, and in both patients a solitary pulmonary arteriovenous fistula could be demonstrated.
