This article presents an overview of current ankle arthrodesis techniques. Surgical indications, pathophysiology of the ankle joint, preoperative assessment of the patient, surgical techniques for ankle fusion, and complications/sequelae are discussed. The surgical techniques section focuses on crossed screws arthrodesis and intramedullary nailing for ...

Wrist arthrodesis results in a high degree of patient satisfaction and predictable pain relief in most patients. Most patients are able to return to gainful employment, many without impairment. Some patients require restrictions and employment in a less strenuous occupation.

Twenty-five adult patients with 32 fused hind-feet were evaluated at an average of 4.3 years after triple arthrodesis. All patients had Stage 3 or 4 deformity secondary to adult acquired flatfoot. All operations were performed using a standardized technique using rigid internal fixation.

Pantalar arthrodesis is a demanding procedure that serves a useful purpose for stabilization of the ankle, rearfoot, and midfoot. These fusions should be recognized as salvage procedures in the treatment of unstable and debilitating conditions as a result of severe degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis, neuropathic joint destruction, and ...

Isolated talonavicular fusions have most commonly been performed for pes valgus deformity, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis. Recent reports have advocated its use for posterior tibial tendon dysfunction. The isolated fusion of the talonavicular joint is an effective procedure to reduce rearfoot biomechanical faults.

For lesser toe deformities, fusion of the proximal interphalangeal joint offers good long-term correction and predictability. Digital arthrodesis has been described for longer than 100 years in the literature, and current techniques closely resemble those described in early accounts.

Lisfranc fracture-dislocations are complex injuries that require a high skill set from foot and ankle surgeons to diagnose and treat. Conservative treatment is seldom an option for treatment of Lisfranc injuries. The authors believe that even subtle injuries require surgical intervention. Tibiotalocalcaneal Arthrodesis
Clinics in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery, 2012Combined arthrodesis of the ankle and subtalar joint is a challenging but potentially rewarding procedure for certain patients. The author discusses multiple aspects of the procedure from patient counseling to postoperative complications.

Although RSL fusion is a viable option for isolated radiocarpal arthritis, the enthusiasm for this procedure should be tempered with the reality that kinematics of the wrist is not entirely suited for independent midcarpal flexion and extension [10]. Limited wrist flexion and extension is expected following a successful RSL arthrodesis.
