First Confirmed Cooperative Breeding of the Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni) in China at the Sino–Lao Frontier 中国中老边境尚勇保护区首次记录白喉犀鸟 (Anorrhinus austeni) 的合作繁殖行为

open access: yesIntegrative Conservation, EarlyView.
First confirmed breeding of the Brown Hornbill in China, documented through cooperative feeding in Shangyong Protected Area. ABSTRACT The Brown Hornbill (Anorrhinus austeni), a Near Threatened frugivore, reaches the northern edge of its distribution in southern Yunnan, China, yet breeding had not been previously documented with site‐attributed nests in

Temporal Study of Environmental DNA and Acoustic Data Reveals Coexistence of Sympatric Bat Species in a North American Ecosystem

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA
Bats are a species‐rich mammalian order that provide a host of ecosystem services, but presently face threats from habitat loss, disease, climate change, and insect declines.

Calpain Proteases and the Evolving Signaling Network in Insect Embryonic Patterning

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, EarlyView.
Insect embryonic Dorsal‐Ventral (DV) patterning relies on the BMP and Toll pathways to different extents. Calcium‐dependent cystein proteases of the Calpain family also exert an important function to pattern the DV axis. In Drosophila, Calpain A cleaves the Cactus/IkappaB inhibitor and modifies Toll signals in ventral regions of the embryo. In Rhodnius

Improved COI taxonomic assignment workflow enhances detection of invertebrates in environmental DNA

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding is an increasingly popular and powerful tool in ecology, offering a non‐invasive method to assess biodiversity and monitor ecosystem health across diverse environments. While the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene is one of the most widely used markers for studying eukaryotic ...

DNA Metabarcoding Using Indexed Primers: Workflow to Characterize Bacteria, Fungi, Plants, and Arthropods from Environmental Samples

open access: yesDiversity
Environmental DNA from bulk materials can be analyzed to gain an understanding of the bacterial, fungal, plant, and/or arthropod communities present. DNA metabarcoding is widely used to characterize these biological communities, by amplifying “barcode ...

Polydopamine‐Antibiotic Composite Coating for Antibiofilm Applications

open access: yesMacromolecular Bioscience, EarlyView.
Antibiotic‐loaded polydopamine coatings are developed to combat biofilm‐forming bacteria on catheter surfaces. These coatings strongly inhibit Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation on diverse materials, including during continuous artificial‐urine flow, and can accommodate multiple antibiotics.
