Model‐based ordination for phenological studies: From controlling sampling bias to inferring temporal associations

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 7, Page 1542-1546, July 2025.
Abstract Willig et al. (Methods in Ecology and Evolution, 15, 868–885, 2024) cautioned that unequal sampling effort and pseudoreplication can bias the characterisation of species phenology using circular statistics. Borrowing concepts from rarefaction, they proposed bootstrapping to control for time‐varying marginal totals that arise from unequal ...

Ecological-based insights into bat populations in the Yucatán Peninsula under a One Health approach: coexistence or biophobia

open access: yesFrontiers in Conservation Science
The Yucatán Peninsula (YP) is home to approximately 60 bat species with differing feeding strategists that, collectively, are fundamental for the health of tropical forests. During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, biophobic (aversive) responses towards bats were

Olfaction in the fruit-eating bats Artibeus lituratus and Carollia perspicillata: an experimental analysis [PDF]

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências, 2015
ABSTRACT Studies suggest that frugivorous bats search and select fruit mainly by olfaction so that they can be attracted by smell alone. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in captivity, the behavioural response (number of foraging attempts) of Artibeus lituratus and Carollia perspicillata offered essential oils extracted from ripe fruit of Ficus ...

Testing the Effectiveness of Synthetic Chemical Lures to Increase Fruit Bat‐Mediated Seed Dispersal in a Tropical Forest

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 57, Issue 1, January 2025.
This study investigates the use of synthetic chemical lures to attract fruit‐eating bats and enhance seed dispersal in northeastern Costa Rica. The lures significantly increased the capture of Carollia spp., a key seed disperser, and boosted seed rain.
