Precise Control of Drug Release in Machine Learning‐Designed Antibody‐Eluting Implants for Postoperative Scarring Inhibition in Glaucoma

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We developed a micro‐sized, biocompatible implant for postoperative sustained delivery of anti‐fibrotic antibodies in glaucoma surgery. Machine learning‐guided optimization of polymer composition, implant geometry, and porosity enabled precise control of drug release.

Habitat selection and reproduction of red-backed shrikes (Lanius collurio) in relation to abundance of potential avian nest predators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Many studies of farmland bird species have related abundance of species to different habitat variables, whereas few studies have incorporated the effects of predation on habitat selection. However, it is generally assumed that prey species select habitat

Gapless Superconductivity From Extremely Dilute Magnetic Disorder in 2H‐NbSe2‐xSx

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We demonstrate that 2H‐NbSe2‐xSx hosts gapless superconductivity at unexpectedly low magnetic impurity concentrations. Combining STM, Bogoliubovde Gennes simulations, DFT, and quasiparticle interference, we comprehensively study the development of gapless behavior and show that SeS substitution reshapes the band structure, enhances nesting, and drives ...

EVIDENCE OF COMMUNAL OVIPOSITION AND NEST ABANDONMENT IN THE NORTHERN TWO-LINED SALAMANDER (EURYCEA BISLINEATA, (GREEN, 1818)) IN NORTHEASTERN CONNECTICUT [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Most plethodontid salamanders oviposit their eggs in an individual nest and attend the clutch until hatching. Here, we describe aspects of the reproduction of Eurycea bislineata (Northern Two-lined Salamander) from three field sites in northeastern ...

Recent Advances of Slip Sensors for Smart Robotics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent progress in robotic slip sensors across mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical, magnetic, and acoustic mechanisms, offering a comprehensive reference for the selection of slip sensors in robotic applications. In addition, current challenges and emerging trends are identified to advance the development of robust, adaptive,

Artificial nest experiment reveals inter-guild facilitation in duck nest predation

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2020
Predation is the most important factor limiting Northern Hemisphere duck nest survival. While most avian nest predators take only eggs, mammalian predators also pose mortality risks to incubating ducks. Partial depredation of duck clutches elevates subsequent nest desertion probability, especially where eggshells provide evidence of the depredation ...

Nesting Success and Nest Predators in Forest Fragments: A Study Using Real and Artificial Nests [PDF]

open access: yesThe Auk, 2000
Abstract Area sensitivity in songbirds is commonly attributed to increased nest predation in forest fragments. In 1995 and 1996, we tested whether the nest predators and nesting success of an area-sensitive forest bird, the Eastern Yellow Robin (Eopsaltria australis), varied with fragment size, and we also conducted an artificial nest ...

Hybrid Continuum Robot Designs and Architectures for Healthcare Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Hybrid continuum robots represent an emerging class of flexible manipulators that blend materials, structures, and actuation concepts from the established fields of soft and continuum robotics. This review introduces an accessible framework to distinguish key hybridization approaches, surveys current designs aimed at complex clinical applications, and ...

Decades of artificial nests towards African penguin conservation—Have they made a difference?

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence
African penguins are among the most threatened seabird species globally and an African Penguin Biodiversity Management Plan (BMP) published in 2013 guides conservation strategies to prevent their extinction.

Evaluation of Spatio-Temporal Patterns of Predation Risk to Forest Grouse Nests in the Central European Mountain Regions

open access: yesAnimals, 2021
We evaluated the spatiotemporal patterns of predation risk on black grouse nests using artificial nests that were monitored by camera traps in mountain areas with a small extant (Ore Mts.) and already extinct (Jeseníky Mts.) black grouse population.
