The use of artificial reefs for marine habitat enhancement is a recent development in Portuguese coastal waters. To date, four reefs have been constructed, off the south coast of the Algarve. The first two were established in 1990 as a pilot project supported by the Integrated Plan for Regional Development (PIDR).

Artificial Reefs: The Importance of Comparisons with Natural Reefs
Fisheries, 1997Abstract Methods used to evaluate the performance of an artificial reef will vary according to the purpose for which the reef was built. To determine how well artificial reefs mitigate losses due to human activities on natural reefs, the performance of artificial reefs should be evaluated using contemporaneous comparisons with relatively undisturbed ...

Artificial reefs and reef restoration in the Laurentian Great Lakes
Journal of Great Lakes Research, 2015Abstract We reviewed the published literature to provide an inventory of Laurentian Great Lakes artificial reef projects and their purposes. We also sought to characterize physical and biological monitoring for artificial reef projects in the Great Lakes and determine the success of artificial reefs in meeting project objectives.

In the past 40 years the coastal marine environment in the Western Ligurian Riviera has been affected by three major human activities: (1) Illegal fishing, especially otter-trawling, in the shallow (< 50 m) coastal zone where this type of gear is banned. The problem is often compounded by the use of undersize net mesh in the cod end of the trawls.

Abstract In Korea, artificial reefs have been installed since the 1970s at many coastal areas for the enhancement of fisheries productivity. They are constructed and installed as government-subsidized projects. Reefs installed in Korea include eight designs—five are for fish and the other three are for shellfish or seaweeds. Concrete and steel are used

Biological surveys of Santa Monica Bay artificial reef and Topanga artificial reef
2021This report details the development of the biological communities on 2 artificial reefs off southern California (Figure 1). Santa Monica Bay Artificial Reef(SMBAR) andTopanga Artificial Reef(TAR) were both constructed in 1987 with 20,000 and 10,000 tons of quarry rock respectively.SMBAR was constructed in the manner of replication reefs which were ...

Location Analysis for Placing Artificial Reefs
2014Location analyses are among the most common tasks while working with spatial data and geographic information systems. Automating the most frequently used procedures is therefore an important aspect of improving their usability. In this context, this project aims to design and implement a workflow, providing some basic tools for a location analysis. For
