Rural Knowledge Transformation in Terms of Mercury Used in Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM)—A Case Study in Gorontalo, Indonesia

open access: yesInternational Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2023
Gorontalo is reputed to be one of the best-quality gold producers in the Indonesian archipelago. Gold production has been largely achieved through the activities of artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM), which as part of its extraction process, primarily uses mercury—a substance known to cause negative impacts on health and the environment, leading ...

Policy formalization of Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) post-ratification of Minamata Convention for Sustainability (case study of ASGM Gorontalo) [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences, 2019
Indonesia ratified the Minamata Convention in Kumamoto Japan through Law No. 11 of 2017 concerning the Minamata agreement. This ratification is intended to provide protection for the environment from the use of mercury-based materials. Previous studies showed that the use of mercury in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) had a significant ...

Inverse Vulcanized Polymers for Sustainable Metal Remediation

open access: yesAdvanced Sustainable Systems, Volume 7, Issue 5, May 2023., 2023
Sulfur polymers made by inverse vulcanization show promise as sorbents for toxic metals. These polymers provide low‐cost and sustainable solutions to capture and remove a wide range of metals from industrial waste and the environment. Recent studies highlight the potential for sorbent regeneration and the use of these polymers as safe storage media for

Heavy Metal Concentrations and Health Risk Assessment of Melon Seeds (<i>Citrullus lanatus</i>) From Selected Markets in Ghana. [PDF]

open access: yesInt J Food Sci
Melon seeds (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai), locally known as ‘agushi’ in Ghana, are widely consumed as thickeners in soups and stews and are a valued oilseed crop, yet data on toxic element contamination from the Bono Region remain scarce. This study determined cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) concentrations in melon

Tropical surface gold mining: A review of ecological impacts and restoration strategies

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 33, Issue 18, Page 3661-3674, December 2022., 2022
Abstract Surface gold mining severely degrades landscapes, causing deforestation, soil erosion and displacement, and toxic contamination. The prevalence of both large‐scale and artisanal, small‐scale surface gold mining in the tropics has risen over recent decades.

Disturbance‐specific behavioral responses of giant otters exposed to ecotourism and extractive activities

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 25, Issue 1, Page 15-26, February 2022., 2022
Behavioral responses of animals to human activity can vary by the type and intensity of disturbance. Giant otters foraged more successfully in protected areas, avoided research vessels in mined and fished lakes and showed tolerance to human presence when previously exposed to ecotourism.

Examining Preference Heterogeneity in Best-Worst Scaling: Case of Preferences for Job Opportunities in Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) Communities in Indonesia [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2021
This research empirically examines the preferences for job-related attributes among rural villagers living close to artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Indonesia. Based on hypothetical scenarios in which a private company collaborates with the local government to establish a food processing industry in these villages, a questionnaire survey
