Artisanal mining in Africa. Green for Gold?

Abstract The livelihoods of 130 to 270 million people depend on artisanal mining. Artisanal mining is a labour-intensive, often illegal, extractive activity. We combine geological knowledge and a source of exogenous temporal variation to construct the first proxy for artisanal gold mining in Africa—the main form of artisanal mining.

Processing centres in artisanal gold mining

Abstract The aim of this paper is to reflect on efforts made worldwide to construct processing centres where artisanal miners can visit to have gold extracted from ore “free” or for a nominal fee. These centres use inefficient grinding and amalgamation processes to extract less than 30% of the gold to give back to the miners.
