Environmental Asbestos Pollution Related to Use of Quarried Serpentine Rock

Science, 1977
Crushed serpentinite quarried in Montgomery County, Maryland, has been extensively used for paving roads and other surfaces. The mineral assemblage includes antigorite or lizardite as well as chrysotile and tremolite. Air samples taken in the vicinity of serpentine-paved roads show that chrysotile concentrations are about 10 3

Asbestos distribution in the central serpentine district of Maryland-Pennsylvania

Environmental Research, 1980
Abstract The bedrock of the Central Serpentine District of Pennsylvania and Maryland was examined to determine the content of asbestiform minerals. Serpentinite is exposed along an approximately 5-km-wide belt along the Pennsylvania-Maryland state line near the Susquehanna River.

Establishment of Vegetation on Serpentine Asbestos Mine Wastes, Southeastern Quebec, Canada

The Journal of Applied Ecology, 1977
SUMMARY The serpentinic tailings from asbestos mines in southeastern Quebec cover 5.5 km2 and are largely devoid of vegetation. The wastes are close to settlements and are a potential health hazard; it is therefore desirable to develop revegetation techniques that will produce a sustained plant cover.

An X-ray Examination of decomposition products of chrysotile (asbestos) and serpentine

Mineralogical Magazine and Journal of the Mineralogical Society, 1946
Many of the experiments described in this paper were made in the course of an examination of problems arising in connexion with technical uses of fibrous asbestos, undertaken about three years ago at the request of Dr. W. Francis, at that time Director of Research for Messrs. Turner Brothers Asbestos Company Limited, Rochdale.

Analysis of serpentine polymorphs in investigations of natural occurrences of asbestos

Environmental Science: Processes & Impacts, 2015
Transmission and scanning electron microscopy were employed to address analytical issues for environmental investigations of intergrown serpentine fibers in natural occurrences of asbestos (NOA).

Clastic Sedimentary Rocks and Sedimentary Mélanges: Potential Naturally Occurring Asbestos Occurrences (Amphibole and Serpentine)

Environmental and Engineering Geoscience, 2020
ABSTRACT Petrography of mélange matrix and clastic sedimentary rocks in coastal California reveals the occurrence of detrital serpentine and detrital asbestiform sodic amphibole (glaucophane). Many sandstones of the Franciscan Complex have small amounts of detrital serpentine, with amounts of up to several percent in some cases. Detrital

[Occupational problems of serpentine asbestos in industry (history and trends)].

Meditsina truda i promyshlennaia ekologiia, 1999
The article presents summarized data of long-standing research of work conditions, asbestosis occurrence, and epidemiology of malignancies in "URALASBEST" enterprises extracting and utilizing asbestos. The research served as a base to elaborate and put into practice a complex of sanitary, technical, medical and biologic measures in various asbestos ...

Cumulative effects of the transport of asbestos-rich serpentine sediments in the trans-boundary Sumas Watershed in Washington State and British Columbia

Canadian Water Resources Journal / Revue canadienne des ressources hydriques, 2015
Serpentinitic sediments rich in chrysotile asbestos, from a natural landslide in the Sumas River Watershed in Washington State, are deposited on agricultural land during flooding events, creating a health concern for the rural population. The sediments have a chemical composition of high magnesium (Mg), nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) and high pH values ...

Altered Functional Expression of Alveolar Macrophage Subpopulations after Serpentine and Amphibole Asbestos Exposure

1989
There is considerable evidence that alveolar macrophages play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of asbestosis (Kagan 1985, Kagan 1988), since these phagocytic cells are a notable feature of histologic lesions at sites of asbestos deposition in the lungs (Davis 1963, Brody et al. 1981, Oghiso et al. 1984).
