Asbestos‐related disease

Internal Medicine Journal, 2011
AbstractInhalation of airborne asbestos fibres causes several diseases. These include asbestosis, lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma as well as pleural effusion, discrete (plaques) or diffuse benign pleural fibrosis and rolled atelectasis. The lag time between exposure and the development of disease may be many decades, thus the health risks of ...

Asbestos Related Diseases

Asbestos-related pleural disease

Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 2012
Asbestos exposure is the cause of significant pleural disease - both benign and malignant. Although there is increased awareness, individuals continue to be exposed, and we will continue to see its sequelae for years to come because of the delay between exposure and disease manifestation.

Asbestos-related disease

InnovAiT: Education and inspiration for general practice, 2014
Asbestos exposure used to be commonplace among manual workers in the UK. Although its import and use has been banned since the 1980s, the long latent period between exposure and onset of symptoms, means that the incidence of asbestos-related diseases has not yet peaked.

Asbestos-Related Disease

Journal of Radiology Nursing, 2018
Abstract Asbestos exposure results in a spectrum of respiratory diseases. Both mesothelioma and lung cancer are directly associated with exposure to asbestos usually after a long latency period, whereas other noncancerous diseases such as asbestosis result in crippling debility.

[Non-malignant asbestos-related diseases].

Revue des maladies respiratoires, 1998
Non malignant asbestos diseases are dominated numerically by pleural plaques. This form of circumscribed fibrosis of the parietal pleural is generally asymptomatic and its potential for evolution is weak. More rarely diffuse pleural fibrosis results from disease of the visceral pleura with a secondary fusion of the two pleural layers.

Benign Asbestos-Related Pleural Disease

Disease-a-Month, 2011
Asbestos, the smallest naturally occurring fiber, was widely used in industry throughout the 20th century because of its durability and resistance to heat. Although health hazards associated with asbestos exposure were noted in the late 19th century, legislation regulating exposure was not passed in the USA until 1971.

Asbestos-related disease in upholsterers

Archives of Environmental & Occupational Health, 2017
Before its use was banned in developed countries, asbestos was widely applied in upholstery. However, the risk of asbestos diseases among upholsterers has only rarely been reported. In this case series, we present a first series of 6 workers employed in small workshops who developed several asbestos-related diseases, including pleural plaques, pleural ...

Asbestos-Related Benign Pleural Disease

Clinical Radiology, 2000
Benign pleural disease is the commonest manifestation of asbestos exposure encountered by radiologists. Benign pleural thickening can appear as circumscribed parietal pleural plaques or as more diffuse thickening of the visceral pleura. Benign-asbestos induced pleural effusions are a significant and under-recognized manifestation of asbestos exposure ...
