Culture of Adult Ascidians and Ascidian Genetics
2004Publisher Summary This chapter describes procedures used to culture ascidians, to isolate and propagate mutant lines, and to identify markers for genomic loci of interest. Ascidians are primitive chordates that are used extensively in experimental biology.

Allorecognition in compound ascidians
The International Journal of Developmental Biology, 1994In botryllids (colonial ascidians), there are two types of allorecognition: colony specificity and colony resorption. Colony specificity is manifested by fusion and rejection between two conspecific colonies. The genetic basis for this colony specificity resides in a single highly polymorphic gene locus (fusibility locus) with codominantly expressed ...

Toxicon, 1993
A wide range of toxins with interesting pharmacological properties have been isolated from ascidians. These include cyclic peptides, one of which, didemnin B, is undergoing clinical trials for cancer chemotherapy and is also a powerful immunosuppressive agent.

On the Sterols of Some Ascidians
Archives Internationales de Physiologie et de Biochimie, 1975The lipid content of sea squirts is low, namely less than a half percent of the fresh weight. Lipids consist of about seventy percent of saponifiable lipids and of about twenty percent of non-saponifiable lipids. Both types of these lipids, including sterols, can be synthesized from acetate by these animals.

The engrailed genes play roles in the maintenance of segment polarity in a variety of animals and in the establishment and maintenance of the mid-brain/hind-brain boundary (MHB) in vertebrates. We isolated an ascidian engrailed gene and analyzed its expression pattern during early development. Expression begins at the neurula stage and is restricted to

Ascidians are tunicates, which constitute the sister group of vertebrates. The ascidian genome contains two Zic genes, called Zic-r.a (also called Macho-1) and Zic-r.b (ZicL). The latter is a multi-copy gene, and the precise copy number has not yet been determined.

Interspecific Fertilization in Ascidians
Nature, 1948THE only experimental work on interspecific fertilization in Ascidians known to me is that of Reverberi1, who succeeded in fertilizing Ciona intestinalis eggs with Phallusia mamillata sperms after removal of the egg membranes. He availed himself of Morgan‘s observation that in Ciona only the egg membranes oppose self-fertilization.
