Usefulness of ascitic fluid lactoferrin levels in patients with liver cirrhosis

open access: yesBMC Gastroenterology, 2016
BackgroundAlthough elevated levels of lactoferrin provide a biomarker for inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer, the clinical significance of these elevated levels in ascitic fluid of patients with ascites caused by liver cirrhosis is limited.

Diagnosis of Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis and an In Situ Hybridization Approach to Detect an “Unidentified” Pathogen

open access: yesInternational Journal of Hepatology, 2014
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a frequent and severe complication in cirrhotic patients with ascites. Although identifying the pathogen(s) plays a major role in the management of infectious diseases, ascitic fluid cultures often show negative

The cost of swimming in generalized Newtonian fluids: Experiments with C. elegans [PDF]

open access: yesJ. Fluid Mech. (2016), vol. 800, pp. 753-765, 2016
Numerous natural processes are contingent on microorganisms' ability to swim through fluids with non-Newtonian rheology. Here, we use the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans and tracking methods to experimentally investigate the dynamics of undulatory swimming in shear-thinning fluids. Theory and simulation have proposed that the cost of swimming, or

Aberrant expression of nuclear prothymosin α contributes to epithelial‐mesenchymal transition in lung cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Nuclear prothymosin α inhibits epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) in lung cancer by increasing Smad7 acetylation and competing with Smad2 for binding to SNAI1, TWIST1, and ZEB1 promoters. In early‐stage cancer, ProT suppresses TGF‐β‐induced EMT, while its loss in the nucleus in late‐stage cancer leads to enhanced EMT and poor prognosis.

Prostate-Specific Antigen in Ascitic Fluid [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Chemistry, 1997
Although previously thought to be produced almost exclusively by the epithelial cells of the prostate (1), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is produced and secreted by several extraprostatic sources (2)(3). Considering the high degree of homology of PSA with the human glandular kallikrein (hKGK1) (4)(5) and the activation of the kallikrein–kinin system ...

Diagnostic Value of Ascitic Fluid Lactoferrin, Calprotectin, and Calprotectin to Albumin Ratio in Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis

open access: yes, 2018
Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is common and dangerous infection that occurs in 8-27% of cirrhotic inpatients with ascites. In the current study we have demonstrated and compared the diagnostic performance of ascitic fluid lactoferrin and ...

Single‐Cell Sequencing‐Guided Annotation of Rare Tumor Cells for Deep Learning‐Based Cytopathologic Diagnosis of Early Lung Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study presents an innovative method to generate high‐quality, objectively annotated cytology datasets without relying on expert involvement. Large‐scale single‐cell DNA sequencing is used as an objective ground truth of cell annotation for generating an accurate, unbiased dataset of exfoliated tumor cells from bronchoalveolar lavage cytology ...

Determination of crucial epitopes in the sperm protein calsperin employing synthetic peptides and monoclonal antibodies

open access: yesJournal of Peptide Science, Volume 29, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
An epitope located at the C‐terminal end of calsperin corresponding to amino acids 228WEKHFLDAS237 was identified by using two monoclonal antibodies and resin‐bound calsperin peptides. Three hot spot amino acids were essential for antibody binding.

Diagnosis of necrotic and non‐necrotic small bowel strangulation: The importance of intestinal congestion

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
CT of 141 patients with small bowel strangulation (SBS) was reviewed. Mesenteric edema and abnormal bowel wall thickening are prevalent in both non‐necrotic and necrotic SBS, indicating the primary pathology of SBS. While bowel hypo‐enhancement was detected in 76% of patients with necrotic SBS, it appeared in only 51% of those with non‐necrotic SBS ...

Case Report: Detection and quantification of tumor cells in peripheral blood and ascitic fluid from a metastatic esophageal cancer patient using the CellSearch® technology [v1; ref status: indexed, http://f1000r.es/2hr]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2014
Analysis of ascitic fluid should help to identify and characterize malignant cells in gastrointestinal cancer. However, despite a high specificity, the sensitivity of traditional ascitic fluid cytology remains insufficient, at around 60%.
