ASEAN’s Economic Community: ASEAN Way or Beijing’s Way?

This chapter assesses the effectiveness of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) process in establishing a regional economic community. It suggests that intra- and extra-ASEAN economic practice reveals that its practice of nonbinding consensus inhibits deeper integration either within ASEAN or the wider East Asian region.
