The symptoms and signs as well as laboratory findings are identical to those with verified bacterial meningitis. Aseptic meningitis is defined as acute meningeal inflammation, fever, and headache in the absence of detectable organisms in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). Organisms involved can include viruses (enteroviruses being most common), fungi, atypical bacteria, or parasites. Often, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and meningitis overlap.
