Hybrid asexuality as a primary postzygotic barrier between nascent species: On the interconnection between asexuality, hybridization and speciation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Although sexual reproduction is ubiquitous throughout nature, the molecular machinery behind it has been repeatedly disrupted during evolution, leading to the emergence of asexual lineages in all eukaryotic phyla.

Management and incipient domestication of Chamaedorea tepejilote in agroforestry systems in Mexico

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Native wild plants are key elements in addressing global biodiversity loss and supporting sustainable food systems. We investigated how rural communities in Mexico manage Chamaedorea tepejilote, a wild palm with edible male inflorescences, by combining ethnobotanical, genetic, morphological and ecological approaches.

Asexual Reproduction in Holothurians [PDF]

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2014
Aspects of asexual reproduction in holothurians are discussed. Holothurians are significant as fishery and aquaculture items and have high commercial value. The last review on holothurian asexual reproduction was published 18 years ago and included only 8 species.

The epidemiology of the blackleg pathogen, Leptosphaeria maculans, impacts fungicide resistance management strategies

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Understanding how infection timing drives disease is essential for the development of fungicide resistance management strategies. For blackleg disease of canola, all infection timings can contribute to the following generation, therefore all fungicide applications have the ability to select for resistance.

Distinct epigenomic and transcriptomic modifications associated with Wolbachia-mediated asexuality.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2020
Wolbachia are maternally transmitted intracellular bacteria that induce a range of pathogenic and fitness-altering effects on insect and nematode hosts.

The first report of M918L (super‐kdr) and L932F voltage‐gated sodium channel mutations in the English grain aphid (Sitobion avenae)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
The study has identified mutations in the voltage gated sodium channel of the English grain aphid (Sitobion avenae) at M918 and L932, which have not been previously reported in this species. Abstract BACKGROUND The grain aphid, Sitobion avenae Fabricius (Hemiptera: Aphididae), is a vector of yellow dwarf viruses and an important pest of cereals.

Loss of sexual reproduction and dwarfing in a small metazoan.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2010
BackgroundAsexuality has major theoretical advantages over sexual reproduction, yet newly formed asexual lineages rarely endure. The success, or failure, of such lineages is affected by their mechanism of origin, because it determines their initial ...

Target‐site mutations and phenotypic failure in Myzus persicae against pyrethroids and carbamates in central Europe

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Molecular screening of 140 field‐collected Myzus persicae aphids revealed target‐site mutations L1014F, M918L, M918T, and L932F in the sodium channel and S431F in Ace2. The M918L mutation was the primary driver of high pyrethroid (cypermethrin) resistance, while S431F served as a definitive marker for carbamate (pirimicarb) resistance.

Discovery and characterisation of succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor resistance in Plenodomus biglobosus (phoma stem canker of oilseed rape)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
SDHI resistance is reported and characterised for the first time in the oilseed rape phoma stem canker pathogen Plenodomus biglobosus (Leptosphaeria biglobosa). We investigate cross‐resistance patterns, associated SDH target‐site mutations, possible fitness costs, and consider the implications for disease and resistance management.

Asexuality: The Insects that Stick With It [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2011
One hope of trying to understand why sex is so powerful and prevalent a mode of reproduction relies on the rare examples of animals that persist long-term without having sex. Now, several species of stick insects join that illustrious circle.
