Heavy metals concentrations in scalp hairs of ASGM miners and inhabitants of the Gorontalo Utara regency

open access: yesIOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science, 2017
We performed the Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis on scalp hair samples of 115 ASGM miners and inhabitants of Gorontalo Utara regency. Along with mercury (Hg), we presented other trace elements such as Copper (Cu) and Manganese (Mn). Concentrations of Cu, Mn and Hg in the scalp hairs of ASGM miners are higher non miners.

Regulation of artisanal small scale gold mining (ASGM) in Ghana and Indonesia as currently implemented fails to adequately protect aquatic ecosystems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Artisanal small scale gold mining (ASGM) operations are largely unregulated, informal and transient. Rudimentary mining and processing techniques used in ASGM often result in degraded environmental, safety, health and social conditions.

Ficus insipida tree rings as biomonitors for gaseous elemental mercury in the artisanal gold mining-impacted Peruvian Amazon

open access: yesFrontiers in Environmental Science
IntroductionThe primary source of anthropogenic atmospheric mercury (Hg) emissions globally is artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). Estimates of Hg emissions from ASGM are poorly constrained due to a lack of monitoring data and the informal ...

Environmental contamination by metals, metalloids, and cyanides in the historic and active ASGM area of Kokumbo in Côte d’Ivoire

open access: yesEnvironmental Science and Pollution Research
In Côte d'Ivoire, despite an intense development of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) activities in the last two decades, the environmental impacts of this activity are poorly documented. This study aimed to document the concentrations of geogenic and exogenous contaminants potentially released by ASGM (metals and cyanides) in different ...

Neoarchean gold grain size and artisanal mining in Migori, Kenya: review of current recovery methods

open access: yesEarth Science, Systems and Society
Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Archean greenstone provides a significant source of income for rural communities. Understanding of the particle size distribution of gold is an important parameter for its recovery as it determines the most

Semantic Web-Enabled Superpixel-Enhanced Environmental Monitoring for Land Use in ASGM Areas

open access: yesInternational Journal on Semantic Web and Information Systems
Addressing these challenges requires innovative monitoring techniques that can accurately assess the impact on land use and land cover. To address these issues, this study introduces a Semantic Web-enabled framework combined with superpixel-based image segmentation for effective environmental monitoring.
