Subterranean environments contribute to three‐quarters of classified ecosystem services
ABSTRACT Beneath the Earth's surface lies a network of interconnected caves, voids, and systems of fissures forming in rocks of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic origin. Although largely inaccessible to humans, this hidden realm supports and regulates services critical to ecological health and human well‐being.

Size‐resolved adjoint inversion of Asian dust
We expanded the variational assimilation system of a regional dust model by using size‐resolved inversion. Dust emissions and particle‐size distributions of a severe dust and sandstorm (DSS) in April 2005 were inversely optimized with optical measurements by the National Institute for Environmental Studies lidar network.

Dust-wind interactions can intensify aerosol pollution over eastern China. [PDF]
Eastern China has experienced severe and persistent winter haze episodes in recent years due to intensification of aerosol pollution. In addition to anthropogenic emissions, the winter aerosol pollution over eastern China is associated with unusual ...

Infection Risk From Humans and Animals in the Anatomy Laboratory: A Scoping Review
ABSTRACT Whole‐body dissection is a cornerstone of anatomy education. During and following the COVID‐19 pandemic, exposure to infectious agents and other risks of dissection were highlighted. To identify potential risks, one must have the data outlining these risks in specific situations.

On the spectral depolarisation and lidar ratio of mineral dust provided in the AERONET version 3 inversion product [PDF]
Knowledge of the particle lidar ratio (Sγ) and the particle linear depolarisation ratio (δγ) for different aerosol types allows for aerosol typing and aerosol-Type separation in lidar measurements.

ABSTRACT Background Ventricular septal rupture (VSR) is a rare but devastating complication of acute myocardial infarction (MI), associated with high mortality despite advances in reperfusion therapy. However, contemporary data examining national trends in VSR outcomes and the evolving role of mechanical circulatory support (MCS) in this population ...

The impact of dust on sulfate aerosol, CN and CCN during an East Asian dust storm [PDF]
A global model of aerosol microphysics is used to simulate a large East Asian dust storm during the ACE-Asia experiment. We use the model together with size resolved measurements of aerosol number concentration and composition to examine how dust ...

Lung inflammation by fungus, Bjerkandera adusta isolated from Asian sand dust (ASD) aerosol and enhancement of ovalbumin-induced lung eosinophilia by ASD and the fungus in mice. [PDF]
BackgroundBjerkandera adusta (B. adusta) is one of the most important etiological fungi associated with chronic cough. However, precise details of the inflammatory response to exposure are not well understood yet. B.

Asian Long-Range Transport in Relation to Atmospheric Rivers in Northern California
The study investigates the effect of aerosol long-range transport on precipitation over Northern California during atmospheric river (AR) events in the 2017 cold season (January−April). ARs in 2017 were one of the strongest to date, and the intense
