Trans-pacific dust transport: integrated analysis of NASA/CALIPSO and a global aerosol transport model [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2009
Detailed 3-D structures of Trans-Pacific Asian dust transport occurring during 5–15 May 2007 were investigated using the NASA/CALIOP vertical-resolved measurements and a three-dimensional aerosol model (SPRINTARS).

Abundance and Community Structure of Bacteria on Asian Dust Particles Collected in Beijing, China, during the Asian Dust Season

open access: yesBiological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin, 2016
Approximately 180 t/km(2) of Asian dust particles are estimated to fall annually on Beijing, China, and there is significant concern about the influence of microbes transported by Asian dust events on human health and downwind ecosystems. In this study, we collected Asian dust particles in Beijing, and analyzed the bacterial communities on these ...

Characterizing the transport pathways of Asian dust [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2008
Backward trajectories, synoptic analyses, and regional dust models are applied to analyze the aerosol particles obtained from aircraft measurements during major dust events in the Asian Pacific Regional Aerosol Characterization Experiment (ACE‐Asia) to understand the controlling mechanism of Asian dust transport.

Constraining recent lead pollution sources in the North Pacific using ice core stable lead isotopes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Trends and sources of lead (Pb) aerosol pollution in the North Pacific rim of North America from 1850 to 2001 are investigated using a high-resolution (subannual to annual) ice core record recovered from Eclipse Icefield (3017 masl; St.

The spread of non‐native species

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The global redistribution of species through human agency is one of the defining ecological signatures of the Anthropocene, with biological invasions reshaping biodiversity patterns, ecosystem processes and services, and species interactions globally.

The impacts of biological invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is characterised by a continuous human‐mediated reshuffling of the distributions of species globally. Both intentional and unintentional introductions have resulted in numerous species being translocated beyond their native ranges, often leading to their establishment and subsequent spread – a process referred to as biological

A climatology of Northeast Asian dust events

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2003
In this paper, the synoptic features of Northeast Asian dust events in spring are studied. Using surface meteorological records for March, April and May of 2000, 2001 and 2002, the distribution of dust-event frequencies, possible dust-source regions and the synoptic conditions responsible for dust activities are examined.

Summertime trans‐Pacific transport of Asian dust [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2010
In mid‐August 2009, ground‐based lidar networks on both sides of the Pacific Basin detected an elevated dust layer. A combined analysis by ground‐based lidars, space‐borne lidar CALIOP, and numerical models revealed that dust particles emitted in the Taklimakan Desert were transported across the Pacific Ocean in 12 to 13 days.

Observations of heterogeneous reactions between Asian pollution and mineral dust over the Eastern North Pacific during INTEX-B [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In-situ airborne measurements of trace gases, aerosol size distributions, chemistry and optical properties were conducted over Mexico and the Eastern North Pacific during MILAGRO and INTEX-B.

Monitoring the impact of desert dust outbreaks for air quality for health studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We review the major features of desert dust outbreaks that are relevant to the assessment of dust impacts upon human health. Our ultimate goal is to provide scientific guidance for the acquisition of relevant population exposure information for ...
