'Mamlukisation' between social theory and social practice: an essay on reflexivity, state formation, and the late medieval sultanate of Cairo [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This working paper is a reflexive essay that tries to think with and beyond one of the basic assumptions upon which the field of late medieval Syro-Egyptian ‘Mamluk’ studies is built: the idea that all late medieval Syro-Egyptian objects of study are by ...

Quantification of sediment reworking by the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea Müller, 1774 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Active organisms modify the substratum in which they dwell. This process, called “bioturbation”, affects the way that biogeochemical fluxes are mediated at the substratum–water interface.

Comment on “De Novo Reconstruction of 3D Human Facial Images from DNA Sequence”

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This comment examines AI‐driven DNA‐based facial reconstruction, focusing on the Difface model. While such technologies promise biomedical and forensic applications, they pose significant ethical, legal, and methodological challenges. We emphasize transparency, benchmarking, and rigorous validation to avoid misinterpretation and misuse.

IL4I1⁺ Macrophages and TDO2⁺ Myofibroblasts Drive AhR‐Mediated Immunosuppression and Ferroptosis Resistance in Solid Predominant Lung Adenocarcinoma

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Solid predominant lung adenocarcinoma exhibits an immune‐excluded, ferroptosis‐resistant niche enriched with IL4I1⁺ TAMs and TDO2⁺ myCAFs. Spatial and multi‐omics analyses reveal AhR‐driven crosstalk that promotes T cell exhaustion and therapy resistance. Blocking AhR with CH‐223191 restores ferroptosis sensitivity, and its combination with ferroptosis

APOE‐stratified Proteomic and Metabolomic Analysis Reveals Mitochondrial Dysfunction Inflammation and Lipid Dysregulation in Alzheimer's Disease

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A large‐scale multiomic dataset (proteomic and metabolomic) comprising 3,060 plasma samples were analyzed to identify proteins, metabolites, pathways, and protein‐associated drugs linked to Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) independently of apolipoprotein E (APOE). AD was associated with a distinct molecular signature that captures.

Engineered GM1 Intersects Between Mitochondrial and Synaptic Pathways to Ameliorate ALS Pathology

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease driven by genetic and molecular disruptions affecting energy balance, protein homeostasis, and stress responses in nerve cells. Studies using human and rodent models identified convergent defects in mitochondria and synaptic function.

Constructing 'traditional' concepts: The case of Maori governance [PDF]

Cholera revolts: a class struggle we may not like [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Few have studied cholera revolts comparatively, and certainly not over the vast terrain from Asiatic Russia to Quebec or across time from the first European cholera wave of the 1830s to the twentieth century.
