Self-healing Asphalt for Road Pavements
This paper presents a unique self-healing system for asphalt pavement which employs compartmented calcium-alginate fibres encapsulating an asphalt binder healing agent (rejuvenator). This system presents a novel method of incorporating rejuvenators into asphalt pavement mixtures.

Fiber Optic Sensors in Asphalt Pavements: Investigation of the Sensor and the Asphalt Pavement
Abstract Implementing fiber optic sensors (FOS) in asphalt pavements provides a wealth of data with multiple applications. Successful integration of FOS into asphalt pavements depends on two key requirements. First, the sensor embedded in the asphalt must withstand the paving process without damage.

In the early 1990s the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) developed a five-year warranty specification for asphalt pavements with the first project being built in 1996. In 2004, results indicated that the asphalt pavements built with the warranty specification had improved performance over the conventional asphalt pavements.
