Asphaltenes: The Cholesterol of Petroleum

Proceedings of Middle East Oil Show, 1995
ABSTRACT Asphaltene precipitation and deposition has been recognized to be a significant problem in oil production, transmission, and processing facilities. The precipitation of asphaltenes is caused by a number of factors including changes in pressure, temperature, chemical composition of the crude oil, mixing the oil with diluents or ...

Self-assembly of resins and asphaltenes facilitates asphaltene dissolution by an organic acid [PDF]

open access: possibleJournal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2013
Asphaltene precipitation occurs in petroleum fluids under certain unfavorable conditions, but can be controlled by tuning composition. Aromatic solvents in large quantities can prevent precipitation entirely and can dissolve already precipitated asphaltenes.

SWELLING OF ASPHALTENES

Petroleum Science and Technology, 1998
ABSTRACT We report x-ray scattering measurements on asphaltenes and bitumen solutions, with attention to the concentrated regimes. We characterize the data in terms of a correlation length which is indicative of proximity to phase separation in a mixture, rather than the radius-of-gyration more indicative of individual colloids.

The Fractal Aggregation of Asphaltenes

Langmuir, 2013
This paper discusses time-resolved small-angle neutron scattering results that were used to investigate asphaltene structure and stability with and without a precipitant added in both crude oil and model oil. A novel approach was used to isolate the scattering from asphaltenes that are insoluble and in the process of aggregating from those that are ...

Asphaltene Characterization: Sensitivity of Asphaltene Properties to Extration Techniques

Canadian International Petroleum Conference, 2001
Abstract One step in asphaltene extraction is to wash the precipitated asphaltenes with the precipitant to remove trapped resinous material. To assess the effect of washing on asphaltene properties, asphaltenes were extracted with three different degrees of washing.

Conductivity of Asphaltenes

1998
Asphaltenes have been studied extensively over the past 50–60 years.1–2 A number of experimental techniques have been employed. The simplest and most widely used technique is the measurement of the solubilities of isolated asphaltenes in various organic liquids, both aromatic solvents and flocculants like pentane.3–4 These studies yield valuable ...

Synthesis, characterization, and mechanism of asphaltene inhibition of phosphopropoxylated asphaltenes

Fuel, 2016
Abstract Phosphopropoxylated asphaltenes were synthesized by functionalizing the Mexican VR asphaltenes with phosphorus trichloride and then reacting the product with different polypropylene oxides. Elemental analysis, and molecular weight characterization showed that in average one atom of phosphorus and one propoxyl moiety are incorporated to the ...

Determination of the Stability of Asphaltenes Through Physicochemical Characterization of Asphaltenes

SPE Western Regional Meeting, 2016
Abstract Significant effort has been dedicated to understand the variables affecting asphaltene precipitation. Based on years of research, it is well known how variables such as temperature and pressure can affect the deposition of asphaltenes.

On Enthalpies of Solution of Athabasca Pentane Asphaltenes and Asphaltene Fractions

Energy & Fuels, 2012
The analysis and prediction of asphaltene precipitation behaviors and asphaltene–diluent interactions are typically treated from either a solution thermodynamics or a colloid perspective. The polydispersity and multiphase nature of asphaltenes allows for portions of these materials to exhibit both behaviors concurrently at fixed global composition.

Raman Spectrum of Asphaltene

Energy & Fuels, 2012
Asphaltenes extracted from seven different crude oils representing different geological formations from around the globe were analyzed using the Raman spectroscopic technique. Each spectrum is fitted with four main peaks using the Gaussian function. On the basis of D1 and G bands of the Raman spectrum, asphaltene indicated an ordered structure with the
