Circulating tumor cells: advancing personalized therapy in small cell lung cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive form of lung cancer that spreads rapidly to secondary sites such as the brain and liver. Cancer cells circulating in the blood, “circulating tumor cells” (CTCs), have demonstrated prognostic value in SCLC, and evaluating biomarkers on CTCs could guide treatment decisions such as for PARP inhibitors ...

An appraisal of clinical practice guidelines for the appropriate use of echocardiography for adult infective endocarditis—the timing and mode of assessment (TTE or TEE)

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2021
Background Echocardiography (echo) is the primary imaging modality for infective endocarditis (IE). However, the recommendations on timing and mode selection for transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) vary across ...

PEG Branched Polymer for Functionalization of Nanomaterials with Ultralong Blood Circulation

open access: yes, 2009
Nanomaterials have been actively pursued for biological and medical applications in recent years. Here, we report the synthesis of several new poly(ethylene glycol) grafted branched-polymers for functionalization of various nanomaterials including carbon

Cellular liquid biopsy provides unique chances for disease monitoring, preclinical model generation and therapy adjustment in rare salivary gland cancer patients

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
We quantified and cultured circulating tumor cells (CTCs) of 62 patients with various cancer types and generated CTC‐derived tumoroid models from two salivary gland cancer patients. Cellular liquid biopsy‐derived information enabled molecular genetic assessment of systemic disease heterogeneity and functional testing for therapy selection in both ...

Computer assisted proof of Shil'nikov homoclinics: with application to the Lorenz-84 model [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
We present a methodology for computer assisted proofs of Shil'nikov homoclinic intersections. It is based on geometric bounds on the invariant manifolds using rate conditions, and on propagating the bounds by an interval arithmetic integrator. Our method ensures uniqueness of the parameter for which the homoclinic takes place.

Risks and Benefits of Using a Commercially Available Ventricular Assist Device for Failing Fontan Cavopulmonary Support: A Modeling Investigation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Fontan patients often develop circulatory failure and are in desperate need of a therapeutic solution. A blood pump surgically placed in the cavopulmonary pathway can substitute the function of the absent sub-pulmonary ventricle by generating a mild pressure boost.

Coupled simulations of the NACIE facility using RELAP5 and ANSYS FLUENT codes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This work deals with the development and preliminarily assessment of a coupling methodology between a modified version of RELAP5/Mod3.3 STH code and FLUENT commercial CFD code, applied to the NACIE (natural circulation experiment) LBE (lead bismuth ...

Integrative analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and exosomes from small‐cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients: a comprehensive approach

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study simultaneously investigated circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and exosomes from small‐cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients. The elevated expression of JUNB and CXCR4 in CTCs was a poor prognostic factor for SCLC patients, whereas exosomal overexpression of these biomarkers revealed a high discrimination ability of patients from healthy individuals,

Remote Sensing of Geomagnetic Field and Applications to Climate Prediction [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2000
Observations show that geomagnetic field lines follow closely the atmospheric circulation patterns and that geomagnetic field variations are precursors to climate change . The exact mechanism for the observed close relationship between global geomagnetic field and the tropospheric weather patterns is not clear.
