The frequency and importance of polyploidy in tropical rainforest tree radiations
Summary The presence of more than two copies of the genome in an organism, termed ‘polyploidy’, is a crucial force in plant evolution, generating genetic, phenotypic and ecological diversity. [Correction added on 22 January 2026, after first online publication: the preceding sentence has been corrected.] The Amazonian tree flora is the most species ...

Theories of mate selection and the effects of assortative mating are reviewed, including differences in the basic theoretical orientations of the social and biological sciences with respect to human evolution and assortative mating. Topics discussed include evolution in parallel and interaction, terminology of nonrandom mate selection, theories of mate

Psychiatric Services, 2012
Psychosocial programs that introduce young people with psychosis to each other encourage bonding and, perhaps, marriage. By providing such programs, are we unwittingly promoting assortative mating, with ill effects for offspring? Or, on the other hand, are we ensuring better health for young people with psychosis and perhaps laying the groundwork for ...

On a vast range of variables, positive rather than negative AM has been found. The highest degree of similarity has been obtained for sociodemographic variables and attitudes, followed by moderate similarity for cognitive abilities, psychiatric disorders, antisocial and adverse behaviors, and the lowest for physical characteristics and personality ...

Various attempts have been made to develop a theory of the genetical effects of assortative mating, using various models. The earliest and most famous is that of Fisher (1918). However, this has run into a difficulty in that his paper is far from easy to understand even despite the efforts of Kempthorne (1957) and Moran and Smith (1966) to simplify his

Influences on assortative mating
Anthropologischer Anzeiger, 1987Age plays a considerable role in assortative mating. As regards this criterion we can distinguish a "rural, more traditional model" with high values of the coefficients of correlation, and an "urban model" with significantly lower values. Concerning eye and hair colour we find both these models as well as transitional forms.

Assortative mating in monozygotic twins
Biodemography and Social Biology, 1990This study investigated assortative mating in a series of monozygotic twins in terms of anthropometric variables. Initially the twins were analyzed independent of each other, and the results showed fairly clear homogamy among female MZ twins and their spouses, after correcting for age.
