Improving theories of change in conservation projects

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice
Theory of change has become a common tool in project design because it helps teams agree on hypothesized causal pathways to a desired goal and examine their underlying assumptions.

Symbolic models for nonlinear control systems without stability assumptions

open access: yes, 2011
Finite-state models of control systems were proposed by several researchers as a convenient mechanism to synthesize controllers enforcing complex specifications. Most techniques for the construction of such symbolic models have two main drawbacks: either

When should meta‐analysis avoid making hidden normality assumptions?

open access: yesBiometrical journal. Biometrische Zeitschrift, 2018
Meta‐analysis is a widely used statistical technique. The simplicity of the calculations required when performing conventional meta‐analyses belies the parametric nature of the assumptions that justify them.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Re-Evaluation of Milton Friedman's View of Instrumentalism [PDF]

open access: yesحکمت و فلسفه
The effects of philosophical concepts can be seen in various fields of science. One of the areas of influence of philosophy on economics has been around methodological concepts and epistemology. It seems that prominent economists of the 20th century were

Characterizing the salivary RNA landscape to identify potential diagnostic, prognostic, and follow‐up biomarkers for breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study explores salivary RNA for breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, prognosis, and follow‐up. High‐throughput RNA sequencing identified distinct salivary RNA signatures, including novel transcripts, that differentiate BC from healthy controls, characterize histological and molecular subtypes, and indicate lymph node involvement.

Early Validation of Automation Plant Control Software using Simulation Based on Assumption Modeling and Validation Use Cases

open access: yesComplex Systems Informatics and Modeling Quarterly, 2015
In automation plants, technical processes must be conducted in a way that products, substances, or services are produced reliably, with sufficient quality and with minimal strain on resources.

Block Bootstrap Consistency Under Weak Assumptions [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper weakens the size and moment conditions needed for typical block bootstrap methods (i.e. the moving blocks, circular blocks, and stationary bootstraps) to be valid for the sample mean of Near-Epoch-Dependent functions of mixing processes; they ...

Emerging role of ARHGAP29 in melanoma cell phenotype switching

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study gives first insights into the role of ARHGAP29 in malignant melanoma. ARHGAP29 was revealed to be connected to tumor cell plasticity, promoting a mesenchymal‐like, invasive phenotype and driving tumor progression. Further, it modulates cell spreading by influencing RhoA/ROCK signaling and affects SMAD2 activity. Rho GTPase‐activating protein

Assumptions for well-known statistical techniques: Disturbing explanations for why they are seldom checked

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2012
A valid interpretation of most statistical techniques requires that the criteria for one or more assumptions are met. In published articles, however, little information tends to be reported on whether the data satisfy the assumptions underlying the ...
