Quantifying hazards: asteroid disruption in lunar distant retrograde orbits [PDF]
The Asteroid Redirect Mission (ARM) proposes to retrieve a near-Earth asteroid and position it in a lunar distant retrograde orbit (DRO) for later study, crewed exploration, and ultimately resource exploitation. During the Caltech Space Challenge, a recent workshop to design a crewed mission to a captured asteroid in a DRO, it became apparent that the ...

Origin of Martian Moons from Binary Asteroid Dissociation [PDF]
The origin of the Martian moons Deimos and Phobos is controversial. One hypothesis for their origin is that they are captured asteroids, but the mechanism requires an extremely dense martian atmosphere, and the mechanism by which an asteroid in solar orbit could shed sufficient orbital energy to be captured into Mars orbit has not been well elucidated.

Eclipse Prediction and Orbit Improvement for Asteroids: Theory and Application to Near Earth Asteroids [PDF]
Asteroids can be eclipsed by other bodies in the Solar System, but no direct observation of an asteroid eclipse has been reported to date. We describe a statistical method to predict an eclipse for an asteroid based on the analysis of the orbital elements covariance matrix.

Space weathering of asteroids [PDF]
Analysis of laboratory experiments simulating space weathering optical effects on atmosphereless planetary bodies reveals that the time needed to alter the spectrum of an ordinary chondrite meteorite to resemble the overall spectral shape and slope of an S-type asteroid is about ~ 0.1 Myr.

Assessment of Flyby Methods as Applied to Close Encounters among Asteroids
Orbital flybys have been extensively studied for spacecraft missions, resulting in effective mathematical and physical models. However, these models’ applicability to natural encounters involving asteroids has not been explored.

Earth's Minimoons: Opportunities for Science and Technology
Twelve years ago the Catalina Sky Survey discovered Earth's first known natural geocentric object other than the Moon, a few-meter diameter asteroid designated 2006 RH120. Despite significant improvements in ground-based telescope and detector technology

Global Asteroid Risk Analysis [PDF]
Potentially impacting asteroids were analysed for their impact risk on the Earth. To this end, the Asteroid Risk Mitigation Optimization and Research (ARMOR) tool is currently being developed. The tool's modules are described and their validation is documented.
