Attitude dynamics of satellites orbiting an asteroid

The Journal of the Astronautical Sciences, 2006
Attitude motion of satellites orbiting an asteroid is examined. The highly irregular shape of the asteroids along with their rotational states can lead to very interesting attitude dynamics. As a start, the case of uniform rotation of the asteroid is examined and attention is focused on planar attitude motion (pitch).

Satellites of two large asteroids

Astronomical & Astrophysical Transactions, 1998
Abstract Various observational data obtained over a period of about 100 years have led to the assumption that some asteroids have satellites. A review of publications has allowed us to compose a list of 50 asteroids that are supposed to be binary. Asteroid 243 Ida with satellite Dactil discovered by space probe Galileo became the 51st.

The absence of satellites of asteroids

Icarus, 1987
Abstract A CCD-imaging survey was made for satellites of minor planets at distances of about 0.1 to 7 arcmin from 1 Ceres, 2 Pallas, 4 Vesta, 6 Hebe, 7 Iris, 8 Flora, 15 Eunomia, 29 Amphitrite, 41 Daphne, and 44 Nysa, with cursory inspection of 192 Nausikaa. Satellites larger than 3 km were not found in this work, nor in previous photographic surveys.

Near-Earth Asteroid Characterization and Observation (NEACO) Mission to Asteroid (469219) 2016 HO3

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 2019
The Near-Earth Asteroid Characterization and Observation (NEACO) mission is a concept study proposing to explore the fast-rotating asteroid (469219) 2016 HO3, one of Earth’s few quasi-satellites.

Structural integrity of rubble asteroidal satellites

Icarus, 2019
Abstract We investigate the structural integrity of asynchronous, rubble asteroidal satellites, which may or may not be in synchronous motion, by identifying necessary conditions for the structural equilibrium of such objects. Asynchronous motion may occur when the satellite’s rotation rate about its mass center does not match its orbital angular ...

Asteroids with satellites: Analysis of observational data

Solar System Research, 2013
The volume of observational information on asteroids and trans-Neptunians with satellites has significantly increased in recent years. In this paper we study the dependence of asteroid duplicity on the main physical parameters of the primary: the size and rotation rate.

Gravitational Deformation in Shaping Asteroids and Small Satellites

Icarus, 1997
Abstract A variety of techniques have demonstrated that some of the solid bodies of the Solar System have distinct irregular shapes, while the rest have sphere-like equilibrium shapes; a sharp transition exists between the two. Such an abrupt, mass-dependent transition may be explained by the yield strength of material at low temperatures ...

Asteroids' satellites in Gaia astrometric data

It is known to the astronomical community that asteroids with satellites are not uncommon in the Solar System. So far we have more than 500 documented asteroid systems encompassing binaries, pairs and multiples[1]. Yet, amidst this group of objects, several others remain enigmatic due to the challenges in observation and detection with conventional ...

Asteroid Impact Satellite Optimization

This paper proposes an optimization algorithm inspired by the physical phenomenon of asteroid impacts on satellites, called the Asteroid Impact Satellite Optimization (AISO). This algorithm simulates the dynamics of asteroid impacts on satellites and incorporates three innovative mechanisms: multi-impact coordination, fragment self-organization, and ...
