Surface Properties of Asteroids
1982From spectrophotometry, polarimetry, IR-radiometry and UBV-photometry surface properties of asteroids are derived, such as:diameters, spectral reflectivity, albedo; based on observable parameters a classification into taxonomic types (Bowell et al.1978) is made and an interpretation in terms of the mineralogy of the surface and meteoritic analogs can ...

Asteroid-GS: 3D Gaussian splatting for fast surface reconstruction of asteroids
Astronomy & AstrophysicsAsteroid surface reconstruction is essential for deep space exploration missions, as it provides critical information about surface morphology that supports spacecraft navigation and sample acquisition. Traditional methods, such as stereo-photogrammetry (SPG) and stereo-photoclinometry (SPC), have been widely applied in asteroid missions, which often ...

The Impact Record on Asteroid Surfaces
2001The surfaces of main-belt and near-Earth asteroids have been carved over the age of the solar system by violent collisions with other asteroids. The craters and related features left behind can be used to interpret each asteroid's unique impact history, which depends on several factors: (i) the dynamical and physical properties of the asteroid (e.g ...

Spacecraft to probe Moon, asteroid surfaces
Chemical & Engineering News Archive, 1994Next week, if all goes as planned, a U.S. spacecraft will go into orbit around the Moon. Spacecraft Clementine will begin conducting an unusual dual military-scientific mission that is expected to set a number of "firsts" and to provide a wealth of data about the surface chemical composition and other features of the Moon and a near-Earth asteroid ...

Surface Gravity Fields for Asteroids and Comets
Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 2013The characteristics of the interior gravity field are derived, summarized, and evaluated near the surface of an asteroid for the purpose of small body proximity operations. In order to characterize the gravity field of a body, the exterior gravity field is widely in use.

The Surface Environment on Asteroids
2012The goal of many space missions to small bodies, such as the Hayabusa mission to Itokawa and the forthcoming OSIRIS-REx mission to asteroid 1999 RQ36, are to take samples from the surface of the body. The prospect of designing a transfer to an asteroid surface and choosing where on the surface to sample begs several questions related to the flow of ...

Consequences of surface variegation of asteroids
Planetary and Space Science, 1994Abstract Different surface layers on opposite sides of asteroids produce colour and albedo variations. Similarly a single-period variation with amplitude 0.013 mag deg−1 in the phase factor has recently been detected during the rotation of (51) Nemausa. Phase factor variation seems to be a general property of asteroids and explains part of the linear

Modeling of migrating grains on asteroid’s surface
Astrophysics and Space Science, 2014We present a numerical method based on the polyhedral data of asteroid shape for simulation of individual grain’s dynamics around the asteroid surface, with application to migration of regolith material on specific asteroid. Surface gravitational attraction and potential are computed using polyhedral method with a correction on possible singularities ...

Asteroid Surface Weathering Optimization
Asteroid surface weathering is an important research topic in astrophysics. Its mechanisms include complex interactions from multiple sources, including micrometeorite impacts, solar wind bombardment, and nano-iron accumulation. Inspired by this natural phenomenon, this paper proposes a novel heuristic optimization algorithm, the Asteroid Surface ...openaire +1 more source
The surface of asteroid 951 Gaspra
Earth, Moon, and Planets, 1996I present new maps, photomosaics and geological interpretations of asteroid 951 Gaspra. Facets and limb concavities suggest a long history of large impacts producing 5 to 7 km diameter craters. Craters 1 to 4 km in diameter date the last facet-forming impact, though it is not clear which facet this formed.
