Contact Motion on Surface of Asteroid

Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 2014
A comprehensive method for modeling the motion of a spherical pod at the surface of an asteroid is presented. Using triangular faceted surfaces, the largest features of the asteroid (global shape, monoliths, and large boulders) are modeled. The presence of smaller rocks is accounted for using a stochastic model of rock generation and collision.

An Asteroid Lander/Rover for Asteroid Surface Gravity Surveying

2016
Microsat and nanosat developers have mastered the challenges involved in developing low-cost, high-performance satellite missions in low Earth orbit. Here we describe a proposed small-microsat-scale (~20 kg) planetary exploration mission based on the same design approach used in those LEO missions.

The surface properties of asteroids

Advances in Space Research, 2004
Abstract The physical characteristics of asteroid surfaces are best defined by direct measurements, few of which currently exist. Thus, inferences from indirect observations must be made. From the limited visible and radar imagery heavy cratering marks the asteroid surfaces and the surfaces are rough at all scales.

Microstructural and chemical features of impact melts on Ryugu particle surfaces: Records of interplanetary dust hit on asteroid Ryugu

open access: yesScience Advances
The Hayabusa2 spacecraft delivered samples of the carbonaceous asteroid Ryugu to Earth. Some of the sample particles show evidence of micrometeoroid impacts, which occurred on the asteroid surface.

The Impact Record on Asteroid Surfaces

2001
The surfaces of main-belt and near-Earth asteroids have been carved over the age of the solar system by violent collisions with other asteroids. The craters and related features left behind can be used to interpret each asteroid's unique impact history, which depends on several factors: (i) the dynamical and physical properties of the asteroid (e.g ...

Near-Earth Asteroids: Surface Structure and Shapes

Earth, Moon, and Planets, 1996
The available data characterizing surface properties of near-Earth objects have been analyzed and compared with the data of large main belt asteroids. There are no evidences of the existence of solid rock surfaces among near-Earth objects.

Asteroids: Surface Composition from Reflection Spectroscopy

Science, 1974
Minerals partly composing the surfaces of 14 asteroids are determined by using asteroid reflectance spectra and optical properties of meteorites and other materials. Individual electronic absorption features are identified in the asteroids' spectra. The energies, relative strengths, and shapes of these features are interpreted by using laboratory and ...

The Surface Environment on Asteroids

2012
The goal of many space missions to small bodies, such as the Hayabusa mission to Itokawa and the forthcoming OSIRIS-REx mission to asteroid 1999 RQ36, are to take samples from the surface of the body. The prospect of designing a transfer to an asteroid surface and choosing where on the surface to sample begs several questions related to the flow of ...

Simulation of Asteroid Impact on Ocean Surfaces, Subsequent Wave Generation and the Effect on US Shorelines

open access: yesProcedia Engineering, 2015
As part of a larger effort involving members of several other organizations, we have conducted numerical simulations in support of emergency-response exercises of postulated asteroid ocean impacts.
