Prelude to a study of the feather mites of Australia (Acariformes: Astigmata)

This paper reviews the state of knowledge of the feather mites of Australia (Arachnida: Acariformes: Astigmata). The known fauna includes 149 species arranged in 95 genera and 24 families, in the Superfamilies Analgoidea and Pterolichoidea. A checklist of the fauna is provided, including bibliographic details for every species and genus.

Acaroid mites (Acari: Astigmata) in Chinese traditional medicines

Almost 2000 samples of the dried plants and animals used in Chinese traditional medicine were collected from a storehouse in Huainan city, Anhui province, China, where they had been kept for at least 6 months. When examined, every sample was found to contain acaroid mites.

A standardized method for rearing Rhizoglyphus robini (Astigmata: Acaridae)

Rhizoglyphus robini Claparede (Acari: Astigmata: Acaridae) is a mite infesting crop such as saffron corms, onions, garlic, leeks and lilies. Bulb mites were observed associated with diseased saffron corms in Vermont research sites, confirming their pest status in New England.

Testes, spermatogenesis and spermatozoa are described in the mite Carpoglyphus lactis (L.), the first representative of the Hemisarcoptoidea superfamily studied ultrastructurally. Paired testes are located posteriorly in the idiosoma, with germaria situated dorsolaterally.

Birds host many lineages of symbiotic mites, but the greatest diversity is shown by the three superfamilies of astigmatan feather mites: Analgoidea, Pterolichoidea, and Freyanoidea. Amarucoptes, a new genus of the family Heterocoptidae (Acari: Astigmata)

Abstract A new genus Amarucoptes, and a new species Amarucoptes busannae, found in Peru on undetermined Passalidae is described. For the first time this heterocoptid mite was recorded from the Neotropical region and for the first time heterocoptids were obtained from passalid beetles.
