Etiology of Astigmatism

Optometry and Vision Science, 1978
A large amount of evidence suggests that astigmatism is hereditary. Other evidence indicates that the prevalence of astigmatism varies widely between and within racial groups and that both the direction and the amount of astigmatism tend to vary as a function of age and in response to environmental influences.

A Longitudinal Study of Corneal Astigmatism and Total Astigmatism

Optometry and Vision Science, 1981
Cross-sectional studies indicate that mean total astigmatism changes with age; varying from as much as 0.62 D with-the-rule during youth to as much as 0.37 D against-the-rule in samples of elderly patients. The present study involves the examination of adult patients who were seen regularly for a period of at least 40 years.

Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy in Moderate to High Astigmatism With a Non-wavefront-Guided Aberration-Neutral Ablation Profile.

Journal of refractive surgery, 2018
PURPOSE To evaluate the outcomes of transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in moderate to high astigmatism with a non-wavefront-guided aberration-neutral ablation profile using SmartPulse allocation.

Correcting Astigmatism

Optometry and Vision Science, 1989
Measurement of refraction in the principal meridians and off-axis meridians in both directions from the visual axis was undertaken. The extent of disagreement between the sine-squared law and the actual astigmatism of living astigmatic eyes was calculated. The corrected visual acuity correlates with the residual ametropia.

Irregular Astigmatism After Radial and Astigmatic Keratotomy

American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1989
Eleven eyes of six patients, who had been referred for management of irregular astigmatism after receiving crossed incisions for myopic astigmatism, had moderate to marked irregular corneal astigmatism with marked flattening in the meridians of intersecting incisions. All six patients had a decrease in best-corrected visual acuity with spectacles after

Changes in Astigmatism

American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1933
This study includes the changes produced by corneal incisions, and keratoconus as well as those arising from changes in the shape of the cornea and the crystalline lens. Read before the section on Ophthalmology, Fourth Pan-American Medical Congress, Mar. 22, 1933.

Astigmatism and LASIK

Current Opinion in Ophthalmology, 2002
Although laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) enjoys a high success rate, postoperative residual or induced astigmatism may limit uncorrected visual acuity and cause starbursts and glare at night. Irregular astigmatism can also cause loss of best-corrected visual acuity, monocular diplopia, and ghosting of images.
