Abstract Understanding how measured molecular signals can distinguish the chemistry of life from the chemistry of the nonliving world is a central focus of astrobiology and paleobiology. We train and compare several machine learning (ML) classification models on data from pyrolysis‐gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry (py‐GC‐MS)—a widely available ...

Galactic Punctuated Equilibrium: How to Undermine Carter's Anthropic Argument in Astrobiology
We investigate a new strategy which can defeat the (in)famous Carter's "anthropic" argument against extraterrestrial life and intelligence. In contrast to those already considered by Wilson, Livio, and others, the present approach is based on relaxing ...

Space Economy and Sustainability: A Systematic Review
ABSTRACT The space economy is booming thanks to the increasing investment of government agencies, private companies, and venture capitalists. From the beginning of the New Space era, the array of actors involved in the development of technologies for extra‐terrestrial activities has increased, as well as the downstream applications that foster ...

The microbial ferrous wheel in a neutral pH groundwater seep
Evidence for microbial Fe redox cycling was documented in a circumneutral pH groundwater seep near Bloomington, Indiana. Geochemical and microbiological analyses were conducted at two sites, a semi-consolidated microbial mat and a floating puffball ...

Properties and Dispersal of a Hydrothermal Plume in a Weakly Stratified Under‐Ice Environment
Abstract The Aurora vent field (82°53.83′N, 6°15.32′W) is located in the weakly stratified Arctic Ocean under perennial ice cover at the western edge of the ultraslow‐spreading Gakkel Ridge, the slowest spreading mid‐ocean ridge on Earth. Here, we report data on the dispersal of the proximal hydrothermal plume in this extreme environment.

Is the Pale Blue Dot unique? Optimized photometric bands for identifying Earth-like exoplanets
The next generation of ground and space-based telescopes will image habitable planets around nearby stars. A growing literature describes how to characterize such planets with spectroscopy, but less consideration has been given to the usefulness of ...

Abstract The NASA Mars 2020 mission Perseverance rover carries a piece of Martian meteorite Sayh al Uhaymir (SaU) 008 as part of the calibration payload for the SHERLOC science instrument. We report SHERLOC observations of the SaU 008 flight piece over the first 1,000 sols of the mission and compare them to measurements done prior to launch, showing ...
