Architectural Decisions for Communications Satellite Constellations to Maintain Profitability While Serving Uncovered and Underserved Communities

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, Volume 41, Issue 1, Page 82-97, January/February 2023., 2023
This paper analyzes which constellation characteristics provide the best global coverage at the lowest operational cost. Our analysis has found that geostationary and medium Earth orbit satellite constellations have the highest likelihood of profitability. LEO networks are more expensive, but if designed wisely, they can be competitive.

Experimental and Numerical Investigations on the Ignition of RBCC Gas-Oxygen/Kerosene Rocket Ejector

open access: yesInternational Journal of Aerospace Engineering, 2021
The rocket ejector refers to a core component of a rocket-based combined cycle (RBCC) engine. The ignition is of critical significance for rocket ejection. Reliable and stable ignition crucially determines the normal operation of the engine.

A Feature-Map-Based Method for Explaining the Performance Degradation of Ship Detection Networks

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2023
The unknowability of the inner workings limits the magnitude of performance improvement of ship target detection networks in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images under Gaussian noise.

Modeling the effectiveness of radiation shielding materials for astronaut protection on Mars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
The surface of Mars is bombarded by energetic charged particles of solar and cosmic origin with little shielding compared to Earth. As space agencies are planning for crewed missions to the red planet, a major concern is the impact of ionizing radiation on astronaut health.

Enabling Astronaut Self-Scheduling using a Robust Advanced Modelling and Scheduling system: an assessment during a Mars analogue mission [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Human long duration exploration missions (LDEMs) raise a number of technological challenges. This paper addresses the question of the crew autonomy: as the distances increase, the communication delays and constraints tend to prevent the astronauts from being monitored and supported by a real time ground control.

Multiscale Fusion Network Based on Global Weighting for Hyperspectral Feature Selection

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2023
Feature selection (FS) is an important way to achieve high-precision and efficient classification of hyperspectral remote sensing images. However, most existing FS methods use a fixed scale to extract features and the relationship between spatial and ...

Training Priors Predict Text-To-Image Model Performance [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Text-to-image models can often generate some relations, i.e., "astronaut riding horse", but fail to generate other relations composed of the same basic parts, i.e., "horse riding astronaut". These failures are often taken as evidence that models rely on training priors rather than constructing novel images compositionally.
